I went down to my friend Tom's farm last August to help him. August is the busiest time of the year for farmers, because it is then that they have to cut the corn. It is also the time I had chosen for my holiday,so I decided to do something that was useful and at the same time quite different from my work at the office in London. Luckily the weather was fine during my two weeks on the farm. One cannot cut corn when it is wet, because then it will go bad when one piles it up. The farmers have to wait for sunshine, and then cut and dry the corn quickly before rain comes.

My job in the fields was to throw the corn onto the high trucks. Luckily I am a strong man,so that I was able to satisfy my fellow workers, who were mostly men that had done this kind of work all their lives. When I woke up early the next morning,I was so fired that I could hardly stand up after all the hard work the day before. However,by the time I had walked out to the field,I felt perfectly all right again. Each day I began to feel stronger and healthier. Of course, this meant I also grew hungrier day by day,but luckily there was good food in plenty on the farm,so there was always more than we could eat.
