In America the red barn (粮仓) has been a familiar sight since the early 1800s.But why have been barns always keen painted red? Why not green or blue or yellow?
A painted barn was an unusual sight before the 1800s, because paint was considered an unnecessary expense. Then farmers realized that exposure (曝露) outside harmed wooden buildings. Thus barn painting began.
To save money, most farmers mixed paint from materials already on hand. A mixture was usually made from milk, lime (石灰)and glue (胶) made from cow's hooves (蹄). To add colour, they tried something like animals' blood, roots, and grasses. None of those materials, however, successfully coloured the paint.
Eventually (偶尔) one farmer used iron oxide (氧化物) , and it worked. Iron oxide made the paint reddish-brown. Thus, the red paint was born.
Later scientists discovered that the color red absorbed (吸收) the sun's rays. That kept the barn cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Today cooling and heating systems have made the color red less important for barns, but barns are still often red. They have become a farm tradition (传统).
