题目列表(包括答案和解析)

阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

A close friend of mine lives with six hundred wild animals on the Greek Island of Kyklos. Ever since he left school ( where I first knew him) he has traveled all over the world collecting animals for the zoo of his own. He hoped to collect at least two examples of every sort of animal for his zoo, like Noah before the Great Flood. But the flood that my friend was afraid of was a flood not of water, but of people. I expect you have heard of my friend: he writes books about his travels, and about the wild and wonderful animals that he collects. The money paid him for his writing the books helps to pay for all the food that these animals eat.

My friend told me that when he was out looking for water last week, (there is not enough water on the island, though there is plenty all round it) he found oil. He needs money for his travels, and for his zoo, and a little oil would buy enough water for a lifetime; but he knows that if he tells anybody else about it, it will be the end of his zoo, and his life's work.

So,if I know my friend, he will not tell anybody (but you and me) about what he found because oil and water do not mix.

[ ]

A. who likes to live with wild animals

B. who enjoys travelling the world and writing books

C. who is fond of collecting animals and studying them

(2) He was afraid of the flood of people only because ______.

[ ]

A. it would take his animals away

B. it might frighten the animals away from his zoo

C. it could drown (淹没) all his animals

D. it would wash out all his animals

(3) He pays for the food the animals eat by _______.

[ ]

A. writing books and selling them B. travelling all over the world

C. selling oil and water D. looking for oil

(4) Which of the following statements is NOT true?

[ ]

A. The writer's friend will not tell anybody about the oil.

B. He doesn't want to tell anybody else about the oil.

C. He knows well a little oil would buy enough water for his zoo.

D. He understands how valuable the oil will be for his lifetime.

(5) In this passage the sentence "oil and water do not mix" means that _________.

[ ]

A. oil is much lighter than water.

B. oil may cause greater trouble to his animal than not having enough water .

C. oil is not so useful as water.

D. oil is not needed by his animals.

Pinatubo awoke on 1 .Hot ash and gas flowed down the hillside and ash clouds rose 2 into the atmosphere.

On the volcano's slopes, seven cubic kilometers of pulverized(成粉末状) rock now lay in drifts(漂流) 3 feet thick, totally reshaping the landscape.

One of the first dangers is falling debris(残骸) collecting on houses and causing roofs to collapse(塌陷).In fact that was the main killer for this eruption. The eruption had come with the annual Typhoons that regularly swept the Islands.Heavy rainfall hit the hot and loosely packed volcanic debris. It was to be the start of a terror(恐怖) that would kill the people here long after the eruption stopped.

Imagine a truck delivering wet concrete(混凝土).But expand that material to 4 cubic meters of debris-all moving at the same time-and you have a Lahar(火山泥石流).

40 kilometers downstream from Mount Pinetubo is the town of Bacalor.Years after the eruption stopped, this town still suffers the onslaught(冲击) of Lahars. Most of its population of 5 have departed to resettlement camps.

About 6 of the population of Bacalor never left. They had been warned many times but the people remained. They seemed to be there forever.

Every year when the rains come new Lahars swamp(淹没)the town raising the land ever higher.Still people rebuild their homes.

Some of them have houses twice or even three times. And some people gave up, and others raised it 7 .

Bacalor was originally a township of twenty-one large villages.Today only 8 remain.

The broken remains of Mount Pinetubo are silent now.But its volcanic ash lay heavy on its slopes.Just 9 of heavy rain, can produce a Lahar. It is not unusual to have eighteen Typhoons a year.So Philippine scientists constantly monitor(检测) the weather on the mountain's slopes.Since the eruption, 10 Lahars have occurred, and all resulted from Typhoon rain.To reduce its damage, a huge system has now been constructed.
