Before winning this game, Liu joined in the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix meet(上海国际田径黄金大奖赛) in September, 2009 and won the second place in men’s 110 meters hurdles with a very slight loss to his solid rival–American athlete, Terrence Trammell. That was the first time that he had shown up on the track and in public after his 13 month’s lay–off. So, this game on October 25, in 11th Chinese National Games was very critical for him to handle. After crossing the finishing line, Liu said, “The most important thing was to finish the race safely and smoothly. The result is not very good but the effort was not bad.”
With the final result of 13.34 seconds, Liu became the first Chinese hurdler to win a National Games title three times.“I’m feeling very good now,” Liu said.“I started to compete at the National Games at the age of 18 and now I’m 26.I hope I can run at the Games again in four years’ time because, for all Chinese athletes, is a dream and it is also my starting point.I would just like to thank all the people who have supported me and all the spectators who cheered for me here.”
It is hard for most of Liu’s fans to forget the heartbroken moment at Bird’s Nest last year at the Beijing Olympics because of the foot injury.Thirteen months later, however, the strong-minded man thrilled the home crowd with the strong comeback and would gain another take–off in his career.“I never thought of coming back when I got injured and I felt my future was in doubt,”Liu said, “But now I have seen there is still a future.”

This is why Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo came back.
The Chinese pair finally won the Olympic gold medal that eluded (避开) them for so many years Monday night, a prize so compelling it lured(诱使)them out of the cozy life of a happily retired married couple. It wasn’t the best skate of their career, but it was good enough for gold and that was all that mattered.
Their score of 216. 57 points was more than three points ahead of teammates Pang Qing and Tong Jian. When Shen and Zhao finished their routine, Zhao knelt to the ice, burying his face in his hands while his wife patted his back. He pumped his fist several times while she smiled, her grin was so bright it could light up the entire arena(圆形运动场).
Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany dropped to the bronze medal after a flawed free skate.
It’s the first time since 1960 that a Russian or Soviet couple isn’t atop the Olympic platform, ending one of the longest winning streaks in sports. Perhaps even more shocking, the Russians are leaving empty - handed, with no medals of any color.
Shen and Zhao, bronze medalists at the last two Olympic Games, retired after winning their third title in 2007. They got married, and lived the easy life of retirees, doing shows and appearances. But something was missing--that gold medal.

2. From paragraph two and three, we can learn ________.

C. Pang and Tong won the bronze medal
D. The German pair ranked the second place
3. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “grin” ?
A. wide smile B. happy laugh C. excited feeling D. happiness
4. What can we know from the passage?

C. It’s the gold medal that lures them back to the Olympic.

BRISBANE—Australian Olympic chief John Coates has said Greek athlete Katerina Thanou should not be awarded the Sydney Olympics 100 metres gold medal handed back by Marion Jones.
Jones, who this week admitted to steroid(类固醇)use in the build up to the Sydney Games, has returned the three gold medals and two bronzes she won in 2000.
But Thanou, the silver medalist in Sydney, was herself banned for two years after she failed to appear for a drug test at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
“I’d like to think that Katerina Thanou would not be awarded the gold medal,” Coates told the Australian Associated Press on Tuesday, “but there may be some legal difficulties for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to overcome in order to reach that conclusion.”
Jamaica’s Tayna Lawrence won the 100m bronze medal in Sydney behind Jones and Thanou.
Coates also said he expected the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to hand back the medals won by the women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
Two of Jones’s team mates in the 4x100m team which finished third in Sydney, Torri Edwards and Chryste Gaines, have also served doping(兴奋剂)bans.
The U.S. women’s 4x100m relay team won the gold medal ahead of Jamaica and Russia.
“On the relays, it’s my expectation that the United States Olympic Committee will be required to also hand back the medals won by the other ladies who competed with Jones in the two relays,” Coates said.
“That is normal practice.”
The United States Olympic Committee (USCO) has publicly apologized to the organizers and competitors of the 2000 Sydney Games and the Australian public for Jones’s actions.
As part of the USOC’s apology, president Peter Ueberroth promised that the U.S. would send a clean team to next year’s Beijing Olympics.
1. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Jones has returned the Sydney medals
B. Thanou should not receive Sydney gold
C. Steroid use at Sydney Olympics
D. The U.S would send a clean team to Beijing Olympics.
2. Thanou should not get the Sydney gold medal because________.
A. she didn’t pass the drug test.
B. she served doping ban at Sydney Olympics.
C. she didn’t take the drug test at Sydney Olympics.
D. she ran second at Sydney Olympics.
3. Which of the following statements is True?
A. Jones has got five gold medals at Sydney Olympics.
B. The USCO has returned medals in the two relays.
C. Thanou should receive Sydney gold medal.
D. Jones also took part in the women’s 4x100m relay race.
4. Why did Coates expect the USOC to hand back the medals won in the relay races?
A. Because the IOC required them to do so.
B. Because they didn’t take the first place in the relay races.
C. Because some of the runners of the U.S served doping bans.
D. Because they felt sorry for Jones’s actions.
5. What would probably happen next according to the passage?
A. Thanou would receive Sydney gold.
B. Jamaica’s Tayna Lawrence would receive Sydney gold.
C. Thanou wouldn’t be allowed to take part in the Beijing Olympics.
D. Fewer or no American athletes will serve doping drugs in Beijing Olympics.
