The weather predictions for Asia in 2050 read like a story from a doomsday movie.

Many experts and green groups fear they will come true unless there is a united global effort to hold back greenhouse gas outpouring. In the decades to come, Asia—home to more than half the world's 63 billion people—will change from one climate extreme to another, with tired farmers battling droughts, floods, disease, food shortages and rising sea levels.

"It's not a pretty picture," said Steve Sawyer, climate policy adviser with Greenpeace in Amsterdam.Global warming and changes of weather patterns are already occurring and there is more than enough carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to drive climate change for decades to come.

Already, changes are being felt in Asia but worse is likely to come.Sawyer and top climate bodies say, and could lead to mass migration and widespread human disasters.According to predictions, icebergs will melt faster, some Pacific and Indian Ocean islands will have to evacuate (撤离) or build sea defenses, storms will become stronger and insects and water-borne diseases will move into new areas as the world warms.

All this comes on top of rising populations and demand for food, water and other resources.Experts say environmental worsening such as deforestation (滥划森林) and pollution will likely enlarge the results of climate change.

In what could be a sign of the future, Japan was hit by a record of 10 typhoons and tropical storms this year, while two - thirds of Bangladesh, parts of Nepal and large areas of northeastern India were flooded, affecting 50 million people, destroying livelihoods and making tens of thousands ill.

The year before, a winter cold strike and a summer heat wave killed more than 2,000 people in India.

People in the nation of Haiti are struggling to recover after a powerful earthquake caused massive
destruction there.
Tens of thousands of people in the Caribbean nation were  killed, and many more were injured.
The Presidential Palace, which is like the White House in the US, was among the many government
buildings that collapsed. Hospitals were destroyed, as were countless homes. The disaster added more
suffering to  people already struggling to cope with everyday life. Haiti is one of the poorest nations in
the world.
International aid groups are rushing to provide food, water, and medical aid to Haiti. People
worldwide are donating money to help. Many nations, including the US, are sending aid as well as
money. The US is sending troops to help with rescue and relief efforts, and to police the streets. "This is
a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share, " said US President Barack
Obama.
The earthquake's epicenter-the point on the Earth's surface directly above where it happened-was
about 10 miles from Haiti's capital, PortauPrince. Experts say it was the worst earthquake in the region
in more than 200 years. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7. 0 on the Richter scale, which is very high. More than 30 aftershocks, or smaller earthquakes, came after the big quake.
Some Americans have a special concern about the situation in Haiti-family and friends. Hundreds of
thousands of people in the US are from Haiti. They are anxiously seeking news of loved ones. And like
other Americans, they are working to help Haiti recover from this disaster.
The earthquake in Haiti occurred on a long fault, or crack in the Earth's surface, which goes across
the island. This underground crack separates two giant tectonic (地壳构造上的) plates, or slabs
( 石板) of rock that make up the Earth's outer layer. Along the fault, the plates slowly rub past one
another in opposite directions. But this movement isn't smooth. The plates'edges get stuck for long
periods of time. Eventually, they may suddenly jerk free. That sudden movement is what results in an
earthquake.

Even at the age of 89 Rene Huyghe still loves the woman with whom he spent World Wardriving her from her house to safety, hiding her in his office, even sharing a bedroom with her. She was “Mona Lisa”, masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci and a centerpiece of the Louvre. He was the chief curator(管理员)of paintings there.

Foreseeing the Nazi drive across Europe, Huyghe began planning in 1938 to hide his charges. When Germans entered Poland a year later, Huyghe’s trucks took Louvre paintings to hiding places far from Paris. “Mona Lisa” rode in a car, “always going with a curator, sometimes with me,” he recalls.

When the Japanese attacked America’s ships at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, they did it secretly. The makers of the movie Pearl Harbor have behaved differently.
The noise about Pearl Harbor, made by Disney, has reached its highest point with its premiere (首次公演) before the movie opens in cinemas across the US at the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a time to recall national heroes who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield.
As Ben Affleck is the main star, the movie seems sure to become a success in the United States at least.
At almost three hours in length, it promises to be a good old Hollywood movie. There is a love story. Affleck and his co-star, Josh Hartnett, both fall in love with the navy nurse, Kate Beckinsale and, of course, there is much human courage and love of country.
It’s certain that Disney will be accused of “changing” history. The showing of actual events in a movie always causes arguments.
Bits of the story are deliberately not mentioned in the movie. It does not address the theory held by some historians that President Franklin Roosevelt knew about Japan’s intention to attack the ships in Pearl Harbor. It is said he did nothing, as he was aware that such a blow would allow him to take America into the Second World War.
Japan remains sensitive about being accused of wartime atrocities (暴行). And Disney is sensitive about its business in Japan, where it has a theme park.
Not all the reviews of the movie have been full of praise. A reviewer for Newsweek, who was given an early preview, acknowledged that the 40-minute sequence (连续镜头) showing the attack itself was powerful. The attack comes quite late in the movie, however, and the reviewer was less impressed with the characters and the love story.
“Almost every line of the dialogue sounds like it comes from an old movie, ” the reviewer wrote

The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to represent all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on Earth.

An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the world rebuild agriculture if, in his words,“the worst came to the worst.” Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above zero degrees Celsius. The seeds will be protected behind concrete walls a meter thick and high—security doors.

The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below zero Celsius. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.

Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure will be the world’s most secure gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first proposed the idea in the 1980s. But security concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was permitted use of Spitsbergen. New Scientist says the plan won United Nations approval in October at a meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

55.The project is meant to_______.

A.increase the world’s food production in the future

B.carry out some scientific experiments on plant genes

C.protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disasters

D.build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds

56.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?

A.The government of Norway will perform the project alone.

B.Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousand years ago.

C.Spitsbergen is chosen because it is away from the threat of unclear war forever.

D.Temperature is a major consideration when choosing the storage place.

57.We can infer from the text that_______.

A.People will get newly?developed seeds from the center every year

B.The storage center will greatly promote the development of world agriculture

C.Norway meant to have built the storage centre more than 20 years ago

D.There haven’t been any seed storage centers in the world before

58.What is probably the best title of the passage?

A.Noah’s Ark(诺亚方舟) of Plant Seeds in Plan.      B.The Best Place to Store Seeds.

C.Concerns of World Food Supply.                 D.A New Way to Feed the World.
