题目列表(包括答案和解析)

It was midnight in Paris and we were rolling toward Avenue Bosguet. As we came to the Pont Alexandra Ⅲ, the taxi slowed down, for the traffic light was red against us, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights.
“You ought to be ashamed of yourself, breaking the law and endangering your life that way.” I protested.
He looked at me, astonished, “Ashamed of myself? I am a law abiding(守法的) citizen and have no desire to get killed either.” He cut me off before I could protest.
“No, just listen to me before you complain. What did I do? Went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is? What it means?”
“Certainly,”I replied. “It’s a stop signal and means the traffic is rolling in the opposite direction.”
“Half-right,”said the driver, “But incomplete. It’s only an automatic(自动的) stop signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. Did you see any cross traffic during our trip? Of course not. I slowed down at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the street at this hour. Well, then! What would you have me do? Should I stop like a stupid animal because an automatic, brainless machine turns red every forty seconds? No, sir,”he shouted, “I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given me by God. Ashamed of myself, you say? I would only be ashamed of myself if I let those blinking lamps do my thinking for me. Good night, sir.”

In today’s world, English is the most wildly used language. It is our duty to learn English in the new situation of the reform and opening (改革开放) to the outside world. How can we master the English language ? I’d like to give you some good advice.
First, get interested in it. I enjoy listening to foreign friends talking when I was a child. At the same time I watched the English programme Follow Me on TV. From then on, I kept on learning English. The more I learned, the more progress I made.
Second, practice makes perfect. Many people study English very hard, but they are very shy to speak it in public, for they are afraid of making mistakes. Remember you have to make a mistake before you can correct it. A native English speaker makes mistakes sometimes, too.
Third, the beginners should be encouraged to pay attention to idioms. The English language has many idioms. For example, you should say “ He is as strong as a cow.”

A woman from Japan ,who had visited major businesses and investment companies in New York City ,was telling a friend about her trip to the US."I studied English before I left home. But I still was not sure that people were speaking English."

Her problem is easy to understand.Americans in business are like people who are in business anywhere. They have a language of their own. Some of the words and expressions deal with the special areas of their work.Other expressions are borrowed from different kinds of work such as the theater and movie industry.

One such saying is get your act together.

When things go wrong in a business, an employer may get angry. He may shout, "Stop making mistakes.Get your act together."

Or, if the employer is calmer, he may say, "Let us get our act together."

Either way, the meaning is the same.Getting your act together is getting organized. In business, it usually means to develop a calm and orderly plan of action.

It is difficult to tell exactly where the saying began.Perhaps one of the actors was nervous and made a lot of mistakes. The director may have said, "Calm down, now.Get your act together."

Word expert James Rogers says the expression was common by the late 1970s.He says the Manchester Guardian newspaper used it in 1978.The newspaper said a reform policy required that the British government get its act together.

Now, this expression is heard often when officials of a company meet. One company even called its yearly report, "Getting Our Act Together."

1.Paragraph1 is written mainly to _______

A.tell us the Japanese woman’s English is poor

B.lead to the subject in the whole passage

C.tell us it is important to grasp spoken English

A.they speak too fast to follow

B.they didn’t want the woman to learn their experience

C.they have some special words and expressions of their own in their field .

D.they are from theater and movie industry

3.The saying “ get your act together” in Paragraph 4 means _______

A.Don’t do that again B.You are dismissed

Gmail tmned five years old this week. It's somewhat amazing to think we've only had it since 2004; Gmail changed the webmail game forever by offering features we now take for granted: a streamlined interface (界面]) , powerful search, pioneering use ofAjax and a then-huge 1 GB of mailbox space.“You'll never need to delete another message " was how Google described it at the time.
