When young people in the United States gather for fun, there is a good chance that they will soon be dancing. If there are no musicians, they will play records. If there are no records, some one is certain to have a radio. One way or another there will be dancing.
The ways that boys and girls dance will often change every year or two. You may hear them say that the very latest steps are “in,’ while last year’s step are ‘out.’ Each boy and girl takes pride in learning newest things. They feel that this is important to remaining popular with their friends.
Years ago the dances of young people were not very different from those of their parents, but high school and college students of today have created their own music and have invented their own dances, thanks to people like Chubby Checker, the Beatles, and Elvis Presley. These musicians helped to make popular an exciting new kind of music that people began to dance to in a different way.
In the late 1950s Chubby Checker started a dance that he called the “twist.” The twist, like so many new dances, was lively, and people who performed it used a lot of energy. The word chubby means “a little bit fat,” which is why this singer and dancer called himself Chubby.
After demonstrating his new dance hundreds of times, however, Chubby was no longer chubby. This is one of the advantages. Even if older people do not like the new dances, they must agree that people get much more exercise from modern dances than they ever got from a waltz.

Advertising gives useful information about which products to buy. But modern advertising does more than gives news about products and services. Today’s advertisements, or ads, try to get consumers to buy certain brands. Writers of advertising are so skillful that they can, sometimes persuade a consumer to wear a certain kind of clothing, eat a special kind of cereal, or see a movie. Consumers might never even want a product if they did not see or hear advertisements for it.
For example, you probab1y do not need the newest cereal in the supermarket. There are probably many cereal brands on your kitchen shelves. You may not have space on a shelf for another. But if you see ads about a new cereal that is your extra-tasty and has a free prize in the box, you may want it.
??? Advertising must get attention. To be effective, it must be exciting, entertaining, or provide some pleasure. The secret of writing good advertising copy is to offer a good idea as well as a product. The idea is what the ad is really selling. One example is an ad that says eating a certain cereal will make a person do well in sports. That cereal brand may sell better if consumers think it offers strength and energy.

At night, bats fly through the air, catching hundreds of insects and other small animals. But during the day, they hardly move at all. Instead, bats pass the time hanging upside down from a secret spot.
There are a couple of reasons why bats rest this way. First of all, it puts them in a position for takeoff. Unlike birds, bats can’t fly into the air from the ground. Their wings don’t produce enough lift to take off from a dead stop, and their hind legs are so small and underdeveloped that they can’t run to build up the necessary takeoff speed. Instead, they use their front claws to climb to a high spot, and then fall into flight.
During the hours when most enemies are active, bats gather where few animals would think to look and most can’t reach. This allows them to disappear from the world until night comes again. There’s also little competition for these resting spots, as other flying animals don’t have the ability to hang upside down. Bats have a unique physiological adaptation that lets them hang around this way without using any energy. For you to hold your fist around an object tight, you contract(紧缩) several muscles in your arm, which are connected to your fingers by tendons(腱);as one muscle contracts, it pulls a tendon, which pulls one of your fingers closed. A bat’s talons(爪) close in the same way, except that their tendons are connected only to the upper body, not to a muscle. To hang upside down, a bat pulls its claws open with other muscles. To get the talons to take hold of the surface, the bat simply lets its body relax. The weight of the upper body pulls down on the tendons connected to the talons, causing them to hold tight. Therefore, the bat doesn’t have to do anything to hang upside down.
1.Bats hang upside down because________.
A. they haven’t developed a pair of strong claws
B. they can’t start to fly from the ground directly
C. they have no hind legs to support their body
D. they can’t find quiet places to stay during the day
2.The third paragraph tells us that bats’ hanging upside down_______.
A. is to save their energy for night movement
B. is a way to fight against flying animals
C. is a great way to hide from danger
D. is a skill to compete for the flying places
3.Why can bats hang upside down easily?
A. Because their upper body is light.
B. Because they have strong muscles.
C. Because their talons are linked to muscles tightly.
D. Because their tendons are linked to their upper body.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A. The living habits of bats.
B. How and why bats hang upside down.
C. The importance of bats’ hanging upside down.
D. How bats use their energy at night.
The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fad(一时的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” – and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer – which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet –adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear – popular in the US and UK – that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version of London’s Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name “i”.
In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use. Most “i” products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.
But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he said.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now linked with portability.” added Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared.
1.People use iPlayer to ________.
A.listen to music B.make a call
C.watch TV programs online D.read newspapers
2.We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is aimed at ________.
A.young readers B.old readers C.fashionable women D.engineers
3.The underlined word “ambiguous” means “________”.
A.popular B.uncertain C.definite D.unique
4.Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are ________.
A.portable B.environmentally friendly
C.advanced D.recyclable
5.The writer suggests that ________.
A.“i” products are often of high quality
B.iTeddy is a live bear
C.the letter “b” replaces the letter “i” to name the products
D.the popularity of “i” products may not last long
