“I grew up on Jackson’s music and I still have all his stuff on My iPod. I think that Michael Jackson will go down in history as one of our greatest entertainers. His brilliance as a performance also was paired with a tragic and in many ways, sad personal life.”

Michael Jackson was a singer, songwriter, dancer and celebrity icon with a vast catalog of hit records and countless awards to his credit. Beyond that,he had transfixed the world like few entertainers before or since. As a solo performer,he had enjoyed a level of superstardom previously known   ——Barack Obama

only to Elvis Presley, the Beatles and  Frank Sinatra.

Michael Jackson was unquestionably the biggest pop star of the 80s’,and certainly one of the most popular recording artists of all time.

Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29,1958.The fifth and youngest son of steelworker Joe Jackson,Michael displayed a talent for music and dance from an extremely young age. His father began to organize a family musical group around his three eldest sons in 1962,and Michael joined them the following year, quickly establishing himself as a dynamic stage performer. Dubbed the Jackson 5,the group signed to Motown in 1968 and issued their debut single in October 1969,when Michael was just 11 years old. I Want You Back,ABC,The Love You Save and I’ll Be There all hit number one in 1970,making the Jackson 5 the first group in pop history to have their first four singles top the charts. Later in 1972,Jackson had his first number one solo single,Ben. In 1977,he met producer/composer Quincy Jones for the first time. With Jones producing,Jackson recorded his first solo album as an adult,Off the Wall.

Released(发行) in 1982,the Quincy Jones produced Thriller refined the strengths of Off the Wall:the dance and rock tracks were more driving, the pop tunes and ballads softer and more soulful, and all of it was recognizably Michael. There was no surprise that Thriller was a hit;what was a surprise was its staying power .Jackson’s duet with McCartney,The Girl Is Mine, was a natural single choice, and it peaked at number two;then Billie Jean and the Van Halen track Beat It both hit number one,for seven and three weeks respectively.

Michael Jackson died from heart disease on June 25 at age 50.

As the country's economy continues to steam ahead, once popular forms of entertainment, such as Karaoke(卡拉OK),card games and even boxing bars, appear to be losting their attractiveness.Stressed out white - collar wokers are camping out on rooftops, smashing(砸)up restaurants, pretending to be children and even visiting cemeteries in a effort to ease the pressure of modern life.
Consider the members of Shanghai's Cat Rain club.By day, this group of young women work executive (决策管理的) jobs, but by night they climb buildings so they can spend the night on the roof."You feel relaxed when you're sitting on the roof, looking up to the sky and chatting with friends," said Gong Ying,25.
The stress of work is not just limited to people in Shanghai.A recently opened restaurant in Beijing encourages customers(顾客) to smash plates --- as long as they are willing to pay to replace them. Some workers even wish to return to their childhoods.Recently, hundreds of people took part in a festival in which adults pretended to be children. It was an adultsonly event, and participants could read comics and eat sweets all day.
Scenic places such as parks and rivers can also help people relax and put things in perspective. But a cemetery?
Cemetery companies in Shanghai organized visits to local graveyards for stressed - out workers in March. The participants were taken to quiet spots in the cemetery where they could think about life and their futures."Pressure may bring us unhappiness, but it doesn't mean we can't find ways out,"says Chen Bin,a rooftop camping fan with still some other interests."Life should be imaginative."

JSC Boggs is an artist who makes money. To be exact,he draws money. In the United States he draws dollars,in Britain pounds and in France francs. Each are almost perfect reproductions, apart from the fact that he writes "Bank of Boggs" or another humorous message on them.

When Boggs goes shopping or for a meal,he offers "Boggs dollars" in the payment for what he wants. He also offers real money. It is up to the people selling the goods to take whichever they prefer.

When a shopkeeper or a restaurant owner takes a "Boggs dollar",he or she gives a receipt in return for the things bought.Boggs then sells the receipt at face value to art collectors. This is how he makes actual money for the times when people will not accept his drawings.

The collector uses the receipt to find the person holding the actual "Boggs dollar" and the two talk over what they think would be a fair price. This gives the shop or restaurant owner the chance to make another profit on the goods he or she sold to Boggs. It means Boggs actually gets paid for buying things. And it means that the collector has a unique work of art---each "Boggs dollar" is separately drawn.

Artists like to make us think. What Boggs wants us to think about is the nature of value and money. What is money really worth? Is value of money the same as personal value? Once "Boggs dollars " have been given away by the artist, they often continuew to circulate and grow on value A "Boggs one dollar bill" may have bought the artist a cup of coffee in New York. Now it may be worth a car or an expensive meal.It all depends on that value a person chooses to give it.

Money used to be worth a certain weight in gold or silver. Now it is just worth whatever the government or the banks.JSC Boggs is trying to start another type of money.People can choose "Boggs dolars" or not.And their value is up to whoever uses them.In a way,"Boggs dollars" are "people's money".

56.How much will Boggs get if he buys a cup of coffee with a "Boggs one dollar bill"?

A.One dollar. B.More than one dollar.

C.Less than one dollar. D.Much more than one dollar.

57.According to the text, the main difference between"value of money "and "personal value" is that ______.

A.they rise or fall separately B.they refer to different people

C.they are decided by different people D.they are decided by different banks

58.What does the writer mean by saying "Boggs dollars are people's money"?

A.They are two different types of money.

B.In fact they are not real money.

C.People can share them and use them among themselves.

D.People are free to use them and deck their value.

59.Choose the girht order in which Boggs gets paid.

a.He buys things with his dollars.

b.He sells the receipt to an art collector.

    c.He araws dollars.

d.The art collector finds the shopkeeper to buy his dollars.

e.The shopkeeper gives him a receipt.

D
In the atmosphere, carbon dioxide actd rather like a one-way mirror or the glass in the roof of a greenhouse which allows the sun's rays to enter but prevents the heat from excaping.
According to a weather expert's prediction, the atmosphere will be 3 warmer in the year 2050 than it is today, if man continues to burn luels at the present rate. If this warming up took place, the ice caps in the poles would begin to melt, thus raising sea level several meters and severely flooding coastal cities. Also, the increase in atmospheric temperature would lead to great changes in the climate of the northern hemisphere(半球),psooicbly resulting in an alteration of earth's chief food growing zones.
In the past, concern about a man - made warming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic is much colder and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather experts are now paying more attention to West Antarctic, which may be affected by a warming on the scale that will possibly take place in the next fifty years from on burning of fuels.
Satellite pictures showthat large areas of Antarctic ice are already disappearing. The evidence available suggests that a warming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms the earth.
However, most of the fuel is burnt in the northern hemisphere, where temperatures seem to be falling.Scientists conclude, therefore, that up to now natural influences on the weather have exceeded those caused by man.The question is:Which natural cause has most effect on the weather?
One possibility is the variable behavior of the sun.Astronomers at one research station have studied the hot spots and cold spots(that is,the relatively less hot spots) on the sun. As the sun rotates(旋转),every 27.5 days,it presents hotter or colder faces to the earth, and different aspects to different parts of the earth. This seems to have a considerable effect on the distribution of the earth's atmospheric pressure, and consequently on wind circulation. The sun is also variable over a long term:its heat output goes up and down in cycles, the latest trend being downward.
Scientists are now finding mutual relations between models of solar weather interactions and the actual climate over many thousands of years ,including the last Ice Age.The problem is that the models are predicting that the world should be entering a new Ice Age and it is not.
One way of solving this theoretical difficulty is to assume a delay of thousands of years while the solar effects overcome the inertia(不活动,惰性) of the earth's climate. If this is right, the warming effect of carbon dioxide might thus be serving as a useful counter balance to the sun's diminishing heat.
68.It can be concluded that a concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would ___.
A.mean a warming - up im the Arctic
B.raise the temperature of the earth's surface
C.prevent the sun's rays from reaching the earth's surface
D.account for great changes in the climate in the northern hemiphere
69.Although the fuel consumption is greater in the northern hemisphere, temperatures there seem to be falling. This is _______.
A.mainly because the levels of carbon dioxide are rising
B.partly due to variations in the output of solar energy
C.possibly because the ice caps in the poles are melting
D.exclusively due to the effect of the inertia of the earth's climate
70.On the basis of their models, scientists are of the opinion that ________.
A.the climate of the world should be becoming cooler
B.the new Ice Age will be delayed by the greenhouse effect
C.the man - made warming effect helps to increase the solar effects
D.it will take thousands of years for the inertia of the earth's climate to take effect

Tom Brennan was working in a Philadelphia office building when he noticed a black bag. The bag contained a book.

This chance discovery ended a 12-day search by the Library Company of Philadelphia for a historical treasure-a 120-page diary kept 190 years ago by Deborah Logan,” a woman who knew everybody in her day,” James Green ,the librarian told the magazine American Libraries.

Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia. It also includes a description of British soldiers burning Washington D.C. in the war of 1812. She describes President James Madison on horseback as "perfectly shaking with fear “during the troubled days. George Washington, she writes, mistook her for the wife of a French man and praised her excellent English.

The adventure of the lost book began on September 4 when Cory Luxmoore arrived from England to deliver the diary of his ancestor(祖先)to the Library Company, which he and his wife considered to be the best home for the diary.

Green told American Libraries he had the diary in his possession “ about five minutes” when Luxmoore took it back because he had promised to show it to one other person. On returning to his hotel after showing the precious book to Green, Luxmoore was shocked to realize that he had left it in the taxi.

Without any delay, Green began calling every taxi company in the city, with no luck, "I've felt sick since then," Luxmoore told reporters.According to Green, no one has yet learned how the diary came to the office building .

Tom Brennan received a reward(奖励)of 1,000, Philadelphia gained another treasure for its history , and Luxmoore told reporters, "It's wonderful news. I'm on high".
