Lately, I’ve been talking about success with design students both at the school where I teach and at other programs that I visit. When I ask, “What is success?” The first response is, invariably(总是), “Getting a(n) 1 and making money.” It 2 some searching to arrive at a richer answer. 3 , getting paid is a baseline for success in any field.Putting this criterion on the table is a(n) 4 step.

When I ask design students to talk about what makes design different from the fine 5 , they gravitate towards(被吸引到)the role of the client.Designers serve clients, or so the logic goes, 6 artists serve themselves.

Although it is true that designers generally rely on clients, pleasing them is not the 7 purpose of our work. What designers share with our clients is the 8 .Our clients wouldn’t need us at all if we weren’t helping them 9 that public. The public may never know who designed the coffee cup they’re holding, the magazine they’re reading or the sign that’s 10 them where to go.But they’re seeing it, and some of them might, at some level, have their 11 enlivened(使有生气), simplified or otherwise improved by it.One way to think about success is asking whether your work gets 12 or used, and if so, whether using it improves people’s lives.

Designers have many ways to 13 to their profession and to see and be seen in the design world. One is entering competitions and 14 work to annuals and exhibitions.Another is 15 the design community-going to events, lectures and conferences, and helping to organize them, too.Yet another involves 16 and writing.Blogs and online journals like this one enable any designer to have a voice and share ideas.

Success is 17 going to work every day and getting paid.Success means finding personal satisfaction 18 your work and loving what you do.And it means engaging with a(n) 19 world:a world of clients and employers, but also of readers, users and other designers. It is those things that make us 20 .

Pets are popular. They’re good listeners, they encourage us to exercise, and they’re always on our side when we argue with others. They can bring people comfort and pleasure.
But it is important to keep in mind that pets can carry diseases that can make you sick. Washing your hands often — especially after you touch, feed, or clean up a pet — is the best way to keep yourself healthy and prevent the spread of disease. Be sure to clean your fingernails carefully every time you wash.
You also can protect your health by wearing gloves while cleaning animal cages or cat litter boxes. Avoid washing your pet in the bathtub(浴缸), but if you do, always disinfect(消毒) the tub immediately afterward.
Be sure to bring your pet to the hospital for examinations every two weeks or month and whenever your pet is sick or injured.
You can do a few other things to keep yourself and your pet healthy. Only give your pet food that has been planned ahead for them. It’s not a good idea to share your food with your pet. Human food (like chocolate) can make animals sick. Never feed your pet raw(生的) meat because it can carry germs(细菌) that cause serious illness.
And funny as it can be to see your dog or cat drinking from the toilet, don’t let pets do this. It’s bad for your pet’s health! Give them clean, fresh water to drink at all times.
Never give milk to cats. The only milk an animal should drink is from its mother. Cow’s milk is not for pets, especially for cats, as it makes them sick.
Finally, some animals aren’t pets. Don’t take in a wild or abandoned(被抛弃的) animal as a pet because it may have diseases that could make you or your family sick. Instead, turn to an animal rescue group that is trained in helping sick or abandoned animals.

第一节(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项

A

If you were to come up with a list of organizations whose failures had done the most damage to the American economy in recent years, you would probably have to start with the Wall Street firms that brought us the financial crisis. From there, you might move on to the automakers in Detroit.

But I would suggest that the list should also include a less obvious nominee(被提名): public education.

At its top level, the American system of higher education may be the best in the world. Yet in terms of its core mission(核心使命)---turning teenagers into educated college graduates--- much of the system is failing.

The United States does a good job enrolling (招生) teenagers in college, but only half of the students who enroll end up with a bachelor’s degree.

So identifying the causes of the college dropout crisis in the world’s largest economy matters enormously, and a new book called “Crossing the Finish Line” tries to do precisely that. Its authors are economists William Bowen and Michael McPherson, and a doctoral candidate Matthew Chingos. The first problem they diagnose is something they call under-matching. It refers to students who choose not to attend the best college they can get into. They instead go to a less selective one, perhaps one that is closer to home or less expensive. About half of the low-income students with an average of at least 3.5 in high school and an SAT score of at least 1,200 do not attend the best college they could have. “I was really astonished by the degree to which well-qualified students from poor families under-matched,” said Mr. Bowen.

In fact, well-off students attend the colleges that do the best job of producing graduates. Meanwhile, lower-income students -–even when they are better qualified—often go to colleges that excel(擅长)in producing drop-outs. “It’s really a waste,” Mr. Bowen said, “and a big problem for the country.” As the authors point out, the only way to lift the college graduation rate significantly is to lift it among poor and working-class students. Instead, it appears to have fallen.

What can be done? Money is clearly part of the answer.

41.Which of the following would people first think of as a factor responsible for the American financial crisis according to this passage?

A. The government.                      B. Public education

C. The Detroit automakers.                       D. The Wall Street firms.

42. What is a big problem with American higher education?

A. It is hard to enroll enough students into college.

B. Many colleges are experiencing low rate of graduation.

C. Many college students stay away from classes.

D. It is hard for many colleges to get financial aid from the government.

43. The title of the book Crossing the Finish Line probably means______.

A. running to the end of the line                B. going to college

C. finishing college education                    D. working hard in college

44. Why do some students under--match ?

A. Because they have financial difficulty.  B. Because they face ambition crisis.

C. Because they lack confidence.             D. Because they can’t get guidance.

45. The passage is mainly about _______.

A. problems with secondary American education and possible solutions

B. America’s financial crisis, its cause and influence

C. low rate of American college graduation, its cause and its influence

D. relationship between American education and its economy
