What does the underlined word mean? A. each other B. different C. the same D. lovely D English is a mixture of many different languages. Because of this, the vocabulary of the English language is very large. It is much larger than almost any other language in the world. Many English words came from Latin, the old language of Rome, and Greek. From Latin we get words like "wine", "use" and "day". From Greek we have words such as "photograph", "Bible"and "ink". Because these two languages are extinct, the words have more often come through other languages such as French, or the old German language. There are also words from both Greek and Latin combined-- "television’’, for example, "tele" is Greek for "far" and "vision" comes from Latin meaning "seeing". Many common English words came from other different places. "Tea" is from China, "banana" from West Africa. "Potato" from the island of Haitiin the West Indies, and "tomato" from Mexico. One reason why the English language came from different languages is that many nations had invadedBritain before. Two thousand years ago Romans came from Italy, and stayed for over four hundred years. After they left, came the Anglos, Saxonsand Jutesfrom the northern part of Germany. In the ninth and tenth centuries Scandinaviansinvaded the northern and eastern parts of the country. Finally, in the eleventh century William of Normandycame from France, and became the King of England. Thus the French civilizationand the French language were introduced into Britain. 查看更多

It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying. There are also a number of clear similarities in the way different animals show the same feeling. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because such behavior patterns are inherited (遗传) rather than learned.

Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like “he went pale and begin to tremble (颤抖)”suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, “he opened his eyes wide” is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese surprise can be described in a phrase like “they stretched out(伸出)their tongues”! Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting(侮辱)or expresses disgust.

Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people’s faces. Disgust, contempt (蔑视) and suffering seem to be the most difficult emotions for people everywhere either to recognize or to express. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do. And psychologists (心理学家) such as E.G. Beier have also shown that some people often give the completely impression of how they feel. For example, they try to show love but in fact communicate dislike. Or when they want to show interest, they give the impression that they don’t care. This can happen even among close friends and members of the same family. In other words, what we think we are communicating through language, voice, face and body movements may be the exact opposite of what for people understand.

Being able to multitask---doing several things at the same time---is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again.

What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle an ever larger number of electronic devices as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a significant amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.

Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.

Multitasking also affects young people’s performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinion of the effect of modern gadgets on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive response. However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive.

Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.
