The story is told of a foreign student studying in an English-speaking country. “Yes, that's what I did,”she answered angrily.
True or not, this story shows the problem with idioms(成语) in a language. Idioms are an important part of a language. But they can be a problem for a foreign student of the language. Often it is impossible to get the meaning from the words themselves. In this story, the young woman did look, but“Look out!”as a set phrase has a different meaning. It means“Take care!”when shouted, it is a cry of warning, meaning “Danger!”
A beginner is often at a loss when he meets many of the idioms for the first time. What does a particular(特定的) idiom mean? In order to get its meaning, he should look it up in a dictionary. When he first uses such idioms, he is sure to run into a lot of trouble. But he shouldn't give up trying. If he keeps at it long enough, he will learn and things will turn out well in the end.
