         Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all help, but the biggest longevity (长寿) seems to come from marriage. The effect was first
    noticed in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows (寡妇) and widowers (鳏夫) were at a much higher
    risk of dying than the married people. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven
    years to a man's life and two to a woman's. The effect can be seen in all causes of death, whether illness,
    accident or self-harm. 　
         Even if the chances are all against you, marriage can more than compensate (补偿) you. Linda Waite of the
    University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years
    longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Similarly, a married man who smokes more than a pack a
    day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn't smoke. There's a flip side, however, as partners are
    more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their husband or wife's death, and caring for
    your husband or wife with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the
    chances favour marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard
    Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. 　
         So how does it work? The effects are complicated, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service
    provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms (生理机制). For example, social contact can promote development of the brain and immune (免疫) system, leading to better health and less chance of
    depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the
    psychological benefits of a supportive partner. 　
         A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The overall social
    network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says:"People are inter-connected, so their health is
    inter-connected."

    　A university graduate described as a “respectable and intelligent” woman is seeking professional(专业的) help after being convicted of （证明有……罪）shoplifting for the second time in six months.
    Ana Luz, recently studying for her PhD, has been told she could end up behind bars unless she can control the desire to steal from shops .
    Luz ,who lives with her partner in Fitzwilliam Road ,Cambridge ,admitted stealing clothes worth ￡9.95 from John Lewis in Oxford Street ,London ,on March 9.
    Phillip Lemoyne ,prosecuting（起诉）,said Luz selected some clothes from a display and took them to the ladies’ toilet in the store .When she came out again she was wearing one of the skirts she had selected ,having taken off the anti-theft security alarms（防盗警报装置）.
    She was stopped and caught after leaving the store without paying, Mr Lemoyne said.
    He added that she was upset on her arrest and apologized for her actions.
    Luz,28, was said to have been convicted of shoplifting by Cambridge judges last October ,but Morag Duff, defending ,said she had never been in trouble with the police before that .
    “She is ashamed and embarrassed（尴尬） but doesn’t really have any explanation why she did this ,” Miss Duff said . “She didn’t intend to steal when she went into the store .She is at a loss to explain it. She is otherwise a very respectable and intelligent young lady .She went to her doctor and asked for advice because she wants to know if there is anything in particular that caused her to do this.”
    Judge David Azan fined Luz ￡ 50,  and warned : “You’ve got a criminal record .If you carry on like this ,you will end up in prison ,which will ruin your bright future you may have.”
    Luz achieved a degree in design at university in her native Spain, went on to a famous university in Berlin , Germany for her master’s degree and is now studying for a PhD at Cambridge University ,UK.

    　　Bill Gates is one of the most famous people in the world. His books have been translated into many languages.

    　　What many people do not know is that he is not the only founder of Microsoft. A lot of honor must go to his partner, Paul Allen.

    　　Allen and Gates met at Lakeside Preparatory School. They and some other friends became interested in computers. They began skipping（逃）PE lessons to play on the school computers.
