       The worst US economic depression in the recent 70 years is forcing senior citizens out of retirement, leaving them fighting for jobs in a weak labor market or risking homelessness.

       The study by Experience Works, released on Tuesday, showed 46 percent of the 2,000 low income people over 55 years who participated needed to find work to keep their homes. Nearly half of them had been searching for work for more than a year.

      “These people are at the age where they understandably thought their job-searching years were behind them,” said Cynthia Metzler, president and CEO of Experience Works.

       “Bur here they are, many in their 60s, 70s and beyond, desperate to find work so they can keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.”

       According to the study, many of the participants had no intention of working past their 60 th birthday, but _______ after being laid off or following the death of the partner. Over a third of the participants had retired.

       Ninety percent of the respondents 76 years and older planned to continue working for the next five years.

       Huge medical bills due to a persona illness or that of a partner were also reasons for coming out of retirement, the survey found. The longest and deepest economic decline since the 1930s is making finding a job for the low-income elderly workers a difficult challenge.

       The Experience Works study found that 46 percent of the elderly jobseekers were sometimes forced to choose between paying rent and buying food or medication. Almost three-quarters believed their age made it harder to compete for jobs with younger workers.

       “This study underscores calls for the need to create policies that remove barriers to employment for elder workers and provide additional programs and services specifically aimed at helping elder people re-enter the work force or remain working,” said Metzler.

Believe it or not, America’s favorite snack food is the potato chip．There is a story behind how it was first made．One might think that somewhere a genius thought up the first potato chips, but it didn’t happen that way．Picture an elegant restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1853．The Moon Lake Restaurant’s menu included French-fried potatoes, a popular food recipe brought back from France by Thomas Jefferson．These were thickly cut potatoes, fried until golden brown and crisp on the outside．One evening a guest in the dining hall felt that his potatoes were too thick and sent them back to the kitchen．The cook sliced some potatoes thinner than before and prepared them for the complaining guest．He was still not satisfied and sent them back again! By this time the cook was very angry and decided to do exactly what the dinner guest wanted：slice the potatoes as thin as possible．Then they would be so crisp that the diner wouldn’t be able to use his fork to eat them．When the paper-thin browned potatoes arrived, the diner was pleased．He was so happy with them that other guests started ordering the new potatoes．The cook’s plan to stop the dinner guest complaining didn’t turn out as expected．Soon Saratoga Chips appeared on the menu and became so popular that people wanted to take some home．The restaurant started selling small packages of the potato chips．A few years later, they were sold all over the U．S．But because the potatoes had to be peeled by hand, it was a time-consuming job and potato chips were often out of stock．In the 1920s, a mechanical potato peeler was invented and soon they were potato chips in abundance．They gradually spread all over the world and have remained popular ever since．

   Chinese press and thousands of tourists have gathered at China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan Province on Tuesday, October 23 to witness the launch of the nation’s first moon orbiter, which is scheduled to take place at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hundreds of domestic reporters, more than 2,000 tourists from all over the country, and space experts from Japan, Germany, Italy and other countries invited by the Chinese space authorities have gathered at the launch center, waiting to see the historic moment. “I’ve seen launches of satellites for more than 20 times, but it’s the first time for me to see so many people coming here,” said 55 –year – old Sun Xiuying, a local villager.

However they said they believed it would not affect the launch mission, and opinion which was shared by technological staff at the site.

Local villagers within a radius of 2.5 km of the launch site and under the trajectory (轨道) of the carrier have been told to move to safe areas two hours prior to the anticipated launch. Tourists  have been charged 800 yuan (105 U.S. dollars) to witness the launch of China’s first lunar satellite. A local travel agency has said that the two observation platforms are capable of holding 2,000 and 500 people respectively, but it is not known how many people paid for the chance.

The moon orbiter, Chang’e – 1, named after a legendary Chinese goddess who flew to the moon, and the carrier Long March 3A have passed all pre – launch tests.

China hopes to become the 17 th nation to join the International Space Station (ISS) project, Vice Minister of Science and Technology Li Xueyong said last week. “The Chinese government has been pursuing a policy of peaceful use of airspace,” Li said.

China carried out its first piloted space flight in October 2003, making it only the third country in the world after the Soviet Union and the United States to have sent men into space. In October 2005, China completed its second manned space flight, with two astronauts on board.
