It's fourteen years since I left the Philippines to live with my family in the USA. A month ago, while on summer vacation back in my motherland, I learned a lesson from mosquito（蚊子）bites. Right before 41 Kennedy Airport in New York, my grandma 　42 me of the behavior of the native mosquitoes around the 　43 like me. She said, "There's an old saying—the 　44 you stay away from the motherland, the sweeter your blood 　45 to the mosquitoes. " Not 　46 it, I replied, "Grandma, that's just an old wives' tale!"

Well, less than a week 　47 my arrival in Manila, I was already carpeted with a 　48 of mosquito bites. I took many measures to keep myself from being 　49 , but they all proved useless.

Late one 　50 in my cousin's home, I couldn't bear the 　51 of the bites. Hoping to find some comfort, I 　52 my cousin, who was sleeping peacefully in the bed next to mine. This Saturday morning I was having a walk around, enjoying the quiet morning, beautiful weather and lovely life, with my dog Jett running　 16　 (enjoy) beside me.

At one home I passed, I noticed a newspaper that　 17 (lie) by the roadside instead of near the door. Thinking I would make someone else’s life a little 18　 (easy), I picked up the paper and gently threw it towards their door. 19　 instead of landing on the doorstep, the paper sailed　 20　 the wrong direction because of the strong wind and landed on the roof of a big truck in the driveway.

　 No one saw the funny scene but me and I burst out laughing. It was very quiet and they were probably still sleeping. It was too early to knock on the door and tell the homeowner 21 their newspaper was. 22 , instead I walked home, got dressed and went to the store to make it right.

　 I returned a little later with a new newspaper and a basket of strawberries freshly 23 (pick) from my garden. I found the homeowner in the driveway with some of his friends. With a deep breath I came up to him and said, “I hope you have a great sense of humour.” I explained what had happened to 　 24　 newspaper.

　 Hearing this they all laughed loudly and I couldn’t help but smile all day. I’ve heard it said. “Character is what you do 25　 nobody is looking.” I should be a man of character!

Known as the Animal Lady in this area which I lived in, I was always asked to lend a hand in animal 36 . One afternoon three little neighbor girls ran up　 37 my door, saying a baby squirrel was on the sidewalk. I quickly　 38 　the kids and they led me to a tiny squirrel still with milk teeth. I 　39　 and held the little creature up gently in my arms to check it for　 40 . It seemed fine. I figured the mother must have been killed, leaving it an orphan(孤儿). Now, the baby was pretty hungry for 41 and then left its nest to search the neighborhood for help.

I was about to carry it into my 42　 when I found several other babies 　43　 to run down the tree from where their nest was. With the first squirrel hid into my　 44 , I stood at the base of the tree and was 　45　 when three more babies ran right down into my hands. Those dear little creatures were so happy to feel safe and 　46 , and they all held each other close in my shirt. I took them home and 47 them bread and milk to eat. The poor starving things went　 48 　as they swallowed the meal.

I phoned a lady in the next town who 49 　a small squirrel shelter. She had a big back yard with large　 50 　surrounded by a tall wooden fence. She assured me she was well　 51 　to care for the babies and provide a natural home for them when they were grown.

I love that those little girls cared enough about the squirrels to seek out the 52 　of the Animal Lady! And I really　 53 　getting to help the baby creatures. And then the 54　 of caring continued 55 the lady with the squirrel shelter took them in. How wonderful to be part of a chain of kindness.
