  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

To paraphrase (释义)18th-century statesman Edmund Burke, “all that is needed for the triumph (achievement)of a misguided cause is that good people do nothing. ”One such cause now seeks to end biomedical (生物医学)research because of the theory that animals have rights ruling out their use in research. Scientists need to respond forcefully to animal rights supporters, whose arguments are confusing the public and thereby threatening advances in health knowledge and care. Leaders of the animal rights movement aim at biomedical research because it depends on public funding money, and few people understand the process of health care research. Hearing allegations (陈述辩解)of cruelty to animals in research settings, many are perplexed (puzzled)that anyone would deliberately harm an animal.

For example, a grandmotherly woman staffing an animal rights booth at a recent street fair was delivering a brochure (小册子)that encouraged readers not to use anything that comes from or is tested in animals - no meat, no fur, no medicines. Asked what will happen when epidemics (流行病)return, she said, “Don’t worry, scientists will find some way of using computers.” Such well-meaning people just don’t understand.

Scientists must communicate their message to the public in a compassionate (同情的),understandable way- in human terms, not in the language of molecular biology (分子生物学). We need to make clear the connection between animal research and a grandmother’s ignorant(无知的)remarks, a father’s bypass operation, a baby’s vaccinations (接种疫苗)and even a pet’s shots. To those who didn’t realize that animal research was needed to produce these treatments, as well as new treatments and vaccines (疫苗), animal research seems wasteful at best and cruel at worst.

Much can be done. Scientists could “adopt” middle school classes and present their own research. They should be quick to respond to letters to the editor, lest (以免)animal rights misinformation go unchallenged and acquire a deceptive (导致误解)appearance of truth. Research institutions could be opened to tours, to show that laboratory animals receive humane care. Finally, because most of the people who are against animal experiments are patients, the health research community should actively make themselves understood by not only well-known personalities such as Stephen Cooper, who has made courageous statements about the value of animal research, but all who receive medical treatment. If good people do nothing, there is real possibility that the uninformed citizens will extinguish (使……不复存在)the precious of medical progress.

Bright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing-What do they all have in common? They are all part of British life.Or so I thought.

However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a traditional character of the British, is no longer tolerated by people in the UK, according to a survey done for British bank Barclays.

Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal.During the Second World War, everyone had to queue up to receive their daily ration(配给)of foods. In fact, if you didn't stand up and wait in line with all the others, it was seen as impolite.

The famous English double-deck buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was seen as a part of life.Almost always, there is queue to get on.But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italians or the French as they queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one entrance to their buses, which could explain their more relaxed attitude to the queue.

Two minutes is now the longest time most British are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly, is the main reason why British people are no longer prepared to queue?

“Used to buying without delay, customers are even abandoning purchases rather than wait their turn,” says Stuart Neat of Barclaycard.“Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low value.”

Perhaps I will have to replace “queuing” with “impatience” in my list of things I associate with the British.

(1)

What can we learn about the tradition of queuing in Britain from the article?

[ ]

A.

It was considered as a symbol of polite behavior among the British.

B.

It is what makes British different from other European countries.

C.

It was a product of the slow pace of life in old times.

D.

It is a long time tradition as old as the queen.

(2)

According to the passage, the British gradually stopped queuing because ________.

[ ]

A.

they prefer shopping online to going to the shops

B.

they follow the example of foreigners in Britain

C.

the use of the Internet has changed their way of life

D.

British buses now have more than one entrance

(3)

The purpose of the passage is to ________.

[ ]

A.

list some things that are associated with the British

B.

introduce the change in the British way of life

C.

express writer's approval of changes in the British way of life

D.

complain about the British losing patience

(4)

Which is the best title of the passage?

[ ]

A.

Queuing Is a Part of Life Now.

B.

The British Queue up at a Restaurant.

C.

UK Won't Wait Now.

D.

The British Have No Patience Now.

As for visiting Walt Disney World. People usually have trouble in arranging. The following will give you some practical suggestions on paying a valuable visit to the famous park.

When to go?

While it’s always busy, Disney World is slightly slower between mid-January and March. It’s summer when the visitors , combined with the heat and humidity(潮湿), are crowded. Your best choice is either early in the morning or late in the day--- often you can enjoy more rides in the first or last two hours of the day than you can the entire rest of the day combined.

Where to stay?

The question: to stay on Disney World Resort property or not. Disney World offers three resort pricing: Deluxe(豪华的), Moderate, and Value, with good facilities and in-hotel attractions. That said, they all offer “Extra Magic Hours”(early access to the theme parks), guaranteed entry when the parks are over-crowded, and frequent shuttle service to the many attractions. Off-property hotels will have shuttle transfers, but often at less regular intervals(间歇),wasting more time in transport. You’ll also need a rental car, which adds to the expense, making up for saving in the hotel rate. The “Magic Your Way Package” is a good value if you have a large family.

What to do?

Make use of the “Fast Pass” , which , for no extra cost, allow you to insert your entrance ticket into a particular machine at the attraction and receive a schedule ride time a little later on. For example, use your Fast Pass ticket at a ride just before getting lunch. Once you’re done eating, you can return to the ride and jump right on during the busiest time of day. At the Animal Kingdom, the animals are most active either early or late in the day, so plan accordingly. Thankfully this is fit for the least busy times of day in the park. Study the map of the park the night before to plan your visit. You’ll save time by knowing where things are and where you’re headed.

1.Visitors who use Fast Pass tickets ________
