B MADRID ---What is it that makes people happy? Youth, health, a good job, good look, a flashy car? The conceptof happiness is coming under increasingly close examination in Spain. As the nation rises to the club of the world’s wealthiest countries, people are discovering that material things do not bring happiness. “ Most people use money as a measure of human value, “ says Jesus Ynfante, author of a book on Spain’s biggest fortunes. “ Expensive products are regarded as the best. The rich are admired simply for being rich, Ynfante said. Yet psychologists warn that happiness cannot be brought. They advise people to look for it in human relations and in the small pleasures of everyday life. Many people regard happiness as a moment of ecstatic pleasure ---- something that, by definition, cannot last----while others speak of it as peace and acceptance of oneself. Polls in different countries indicate that between 65 and 85 per cent of the world’s population regard themselves as reasonably happy. Around 40 per cent of a person’s happiness is thought to be determined by genetics , while the rest depends on childhood environment and the process of growing up. Perhaps the most surprising thing about happiness is that it has little to do with age, health, wealth, or other values thought to be important in Western society. For most Spaniards, happiness is linked with feeling close to other people. Happy people accept their limitations and set themselves reachable goals, experts say. There are lifestyle choices.which favour happiness, such as exercise, eating carbohydrates and exposing oneself to sunlight. But the main secret of happiness is to take pleasure in small things. “ If you are given a choice between eternal happiness and a cheese sandwich, take the sandwich, advises the musician Julian Hernandez. 1. Spain, as this passage tells us, . A.has built more clubs than the other countries B.has owned the largest group of experts C.has become one of the richest countries in the world D.has produced the most wealth in the world 2. Happy people, as we can find in this passage . A.are always full of feelings B.are always born in rich families C.always enjoy achievement they get D.always look down upon themselves 4. What Julian Hernandez advises at the end of this passage suggests that . A.he is not happy musician B.he is leading a hard life C.he doesn’t agree with the idea shown in the passage D.he is humorous and happy. 查看更多

MADRID, June 25 (Reuters) --Spain's Parliament (国会) voiced its support today for the rights of great apes to life and freedom.

The Parliament's environmental committee approved resolutions (决议) urging Spain to obey the Great Ape Project (GAP), designed by scientists and philosophers who say our closest genetic relatives deserve rights hitherto (迄今) limited to humans.

"This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defence of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity," said Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of GAP—Spain.

Spain may be better known abroad for bullfighting than animal rights but the new measures are the latest move turning once conservative Spain into a liberal trailblazer.

The new resolutions have cross-party or majority support. They are expected to become law and the Government is now committed to update the statute book within a year to outlaw harmful experiments on apes in Spain.

"We have no knowledge of great apes being used in experiments in Spain, but there is currently no law preventing that from happening," Mr. Pozas said.

Keeping apes for circuses, television commercials or filming will also be forbidden. Keeping an estimated 315 apes in Spanish zoos will not be illegal, but supporters of the Bill say conditions will need to improve.

Philosophers Peter Singer and Paola Cavalieri founded GAP in 1993, arguing that "non-human hominids" should enjoy the right to life, freedom and not to be mistreated. In an e-mail to friends following the Spanish parliamentary decision, Singer wrote:" Congratulations everyone in Spain who has worked so hard on this. That's wonderful and very exciting news!"

Zinedine Zidane, who dreams of leading France to its second World Cup title in a row next month, has always preferred to express himself with a football rather than with words.

Last Wednesday Zidane scored the decisive goal when Real Madrid of Spain won the Champions League final against Germany’s Leverkusen 2-1.

He became one of the world’s most expensive players when he joined Real Madrid from Italy’s Juventus for US $ 66 million. And he has been a national hero since he scored twice in the 3-0 defeat of Brazil in the 1998 World Cup Final.

But despite his success, Zidane has always kept his feet on the ground. He leads a quiet family life, there is hardly any gossip about him and he avoids putting his wife and two children in the spotlight.

“Just because I’m a public figure it doesn’t mean I have to express myself on everything. I don’t like to discuss some personal matters publicly.” he said.

Even as a child playing football in the slum area of Marseille, France, where he was raised by his Algerian parents, Zidane was shy.

He loved football even as a little kid. “I realized football is a wonderful mixture of a sharp mind and hard training rather than just talking,”he said.

Even when the match awards were just chocolate and bread, Zidane found that football made his poor childhood rich.

Before he was 10 years old, it was obvious that he could become a great footballer. He was offered his first professional contract when he was just 20. Now, at the age of 29, he has already picked up two World Player of the year awards.

This quiet striker has not yet spoken of his hopes for the coming World Cup. But his fans across the world will be eagerly watching him to see what he’ll do this time.

I chose to study in Madrid because I had a desire to learn Spanish. My first impressions of Madrid were incredible. It was before the New Year that I arrived in Madrid for the first time. While traveling to my Spanish friend’s house in a taxi, I appreciated the buildings along the road which were different from those of my own country.

There are an incredible number of restaurants and bars from all over the world. If you are really into sightseeing, I hope you have rechargeable batteries for your digital camera, because one week really isn’t enough time to see everything here including a number of art, science, and historical museums as well as parks, buildings, and amazing landscapes.

What I liked best about life in Madrid was the fact that if you were frustrated with schoolwork and wanted to have some fun, you can easily go out. The nightlife never seems to stop and the people are all very friendly. You can meet people and practice Spanish while having fun at the same time.

What I liked least was the fact that many people smoked in the streets. Also, coming from the US, I was used to having a big breakfast every morning, but while living with an actual Spanish family, I wasn’t really satisfied with the food in the morning.

I think I have definitely become more independent since I came back from Spain. Living in a big city like Madrid I found that it is necessary to plan ahead and to make a schedule for future. There is so much to see, not just in the Spanish World, but in the European World as well.
