Life in space will certainly take some getting used toBut the space station has been designed to keep the astronauts as comfortable as possible—the modules() are roomybrightand kept at a constant 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s important the crew members are comfortable because they’ll be busy aboard the station. In a typical workdaycrew members will spend 14 hours working and exercising,1.5 hours preparing and eating mealsand 8.5 hours sleeping. Here are some other fun facts about life aboard the station

Food

Come mealtimeastronauts will have a special dining kitchen.Space food just keeps getting better—and more like food we enjoy here on Earth. In early space missionsastronauts could eat only freeze?dried food that didn’t require any preparation. But the space station is equipped with watermicrowave ovensand refrigeratorsallowing the folks on board to eat more “normal” types of foodincluding fruitvegetablesand ice cream!

Sleep

Each crew member has a private room. With no gravitythey’ll need to tie themselves to their bedsor they will float awayThat might sound like a strange way to sleepbut astronauts from past space missions report that sleeping in space is actually pretty great!

Exercise

You might not think itbut exercise is even more important on the station than it is on Earth. There is not much gravity in space.Astronauts don’t stand upsit down or walk in spaceso their muscles and bones don’t have to work much—and this muscle and bone loss can be dangerous back on Earth. To fight thisastronauts on the station will exercise on bikesrowing machinesand other equipment about two hours every day.

Clothing

Astronauts will have to wear special space suits while traveling aboard the US.shuttle or Russian rockets. But once they’re safe inside the space stationcrew members can wear regular clothing.Of coursea specially designedpressurized space suit is required for space walks. It has to withstand(经受住) flying pieces and protect the astronauts from dramatic temperature changes. It can range from 120 degrees below Fahrenheit in the shadow of the station to 250 degrees in the hot sun.

Personal Cleanliness

Simple tasks like brushing your teeth can be challenging in a weightless environment.A little water doesn’t flow in a stream—it suspends in a bubbleAstronauts will use a freshwater hose(软管) to take showersshampooand wash off—then a second vacuum hose to suction() off the dirty water. And how do you go to the bathroom in spaceWith a special “air toilet” that uses flowing air instead of water to dispose of waste.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They declare that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown part of the city and so less dirty air from car engines.

For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example. They want the city to draw special lanes for bicycles only on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea-they say it will slow the traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like the idea-they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.

The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park-the largest place of open ground in New York-is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.

Jerry Morris died on 28 October 2009. He was 99 years old. You have probably never heard of him. He was a professor of public health. More than 50 years ago he produced one of the most famous epidemiological (流行病学) papers of the 20th century.

His study showed that bus conductors were much less likely to die of heart disease than bus drivers. Why? Because the conductors spent their working day walking. It seems obvious now but in the middle of the last century doctors were puzzled by the rising numbers of people who got heart diseases. Jerry Morris found one of the main causes: a sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyle. He started exercising for a few minutes each day and lived until his 100th year.

If you wish to protect your heart, you have to do more than wander in the garden. The exercise needs to be reasonable. Jogging is not for everyone and a round trip to the gym takes a couple of hours, plus the monthly membership fee is only good value if you visit regularly. The answer is simple: walk.

A half-hour purposeful walk five times a week will lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes and strokes. Older people sometimes feel they have left it too late. But it is never too late to start and there are no upper age limits. Start gently. Take your time: a 15-minute flat walk in the nearest park, four or five times a week. Within a month or so, you are already beginning to protect your heart. Build the walks up. When you can comfortably walk for half an hour in the park, go further: try following rivers and canals.

Regular walkers have their own natural gymnasium. There is no membership fee, just some of the finest scenery in the world. Great Britain is the walker’s gym. When you have followed the rivers and canals, and are enjoying walking for a couple of hours, head for the coast. Once again, build it up slowly. When you are comfortable with long coastal walks, you can think of our national parks.

1.Jerry Morris is mentioned in the first paragraph mainly to __________.

A. make his epidemiological message known to the public

B. praise his research into ways of improving public health

C. introduce the topic of doing exercise and keeping healthy

D. give an example of a person who lives a healthy and long life

2.We can learn from the passage that __________.

A. bus conductors are more likely to die of heart disease than bus drivers.

B. doctors in the 1950s knew why heart diseases kept happening to people.

C. walking is better than doing sports in a gym because it saves time and money.

D. British people love walking because they have free gymnasium with finest scenery.

3.What suggestion does the writer give about walking?

A. Parks are the best place for walking.

B. Starters should not push themselves too hard.

C. A two-quarter walk a day is suitable for starters.

D. People of old age might not be fit enough to start walking.

4.What might be the best title for this passage?

A. Long Life Comes from Walking

B. Walking Helps Cure Heart Disease

C. A Walk a Day Keeps the Doctors away

D. An Hour’s Walk in Nature is Worth Two in the Gym

Tanni won gold in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres relay, setting two world records in the process. In the same year she achieved the first of her six London Wheelchair Marathon victories.

Tanni’s success had been part motivation(动机), part preparation, “The training I do that enables me to be a good sprinter(短跑运动员) enables me to be good at a marathon too. I train 50 weeks of the year and that keeps me prepared for whatever distance I want to see…. I am still competing at a very high level, but as I get older, things get harder and I want to retire before I fall apart.”

Indeed Tanni retired finally after the Visa Paralympic World Cup in 2007. Her wish is to coach young athletes for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

In spite of ups and downs, she never takes her fate lying down. In her splendid life, she has won an amazing eleven gold medals, four silvers and one bronze in series of Paralympics- a top level athletic career covering two decades.
