阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

There are people in Italy who can't stand soccer. Not all Canadians love hockey.A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who frown when somebody mentions baseball.Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it's a game better suited to the 19 th century, slow, quiet, and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there's the sport that values “the hit”.

By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent, still.

On TV the game is divided into a dozen perspectives, replays, close-ups.The geometry(几何学) of the game, however, is essential to understanding it.You will view the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game.It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won't do it for you.

Take, for example, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, knees flexed(弯曲).His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The skeptic(怀疑论者) still cannot think of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws:the third baseman goes up on his toes, flexes his arms or brings the glove to a point in front of him, takes a step right or left, backward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to check his first baseman's position.Suppose the pitch is a ball.“Nothing happened,” you say.“I could have had my eyes closed.”

The skeptic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is.Watch the third baseman.Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of ball on wood.If football is a symphony of movement and theatre, baseball is chamber music, a spacious interlocking(连锁) of notes, chorus(和声) and responses.

[ ]

A.

Even if the third baseman closed his eyes a moment ago, it could make no difference to the result

B.

The third baseman is so good at baseball that he could finish the game with eyes closed all the time and do his work well

The consequence was so bad that he could not bear to see it

Chinese martial arts(武术) have quite a long history. They form a necessary part of the Chinese culture and they are a part of the nation's spirit. Not only Chinese people love their martial arts, many foreigners are also crazy about them. Perhaps I'm one of those eager foreigners.

Actually, I've exercised all my life. I used to be a football player and I once loved swimming very much. But I became a Chinese martial arts fan the moment I saw them in a film. So, I decided to take them up while I was studying in Xi'an.

Practicing Chinese martial arts requires a lot of effort. You have to be able to “stand as straight as a pine tree, sit as square as a stone, and move as quickly as gust of wind (一阵风)”. In addition, it takes a long time for you to realize the deep meaning of the arts. Not all people who practice Chinese martial arts have a deep enough understanding of them. Some regard them only as physical movement; you move here, hit your rival(对手) there … But my coach has tried to make me realize their great underlying(内在的) meaning, which has a great deal to do with one's mental state. Gradually, I've come to understand that the martial arts do not only improve my physical condition, but also make me feel more confident in dealing with the world around me. A lot of actions of Chinese martial arts are actually based on meditation(沉思). Many of my American friends have benefited a lot from practicing the arts, mentally and physically.

Now there are quite a lot of martial arts clubs in the United States. American people are willing to spend their free time learning Chinese martial arts. For them, the martial arts are a unique(独有的) culture as well as a beneficial form of exercise. According to a report, one in every ten Americans once studied or is studying a style of martial arts. I myself am planning to set up a martial arts school in my home country as soon as I complete my study in China.

C.he is so attracted by Chinese martial arts

D.he would like to see more Americans practicing Chinese martial arts

2.Which of the following is not true about the Chinese martial arts according to the passage?

[ ]

A.They can be traced back to a long time ago.

B.They partly symbolized the Chinese nation's spirit.

C.They are a part of Chinese people's treasured culture.

D.They simply depend on pure physical movement.

3.The author began to show interest in Chinese martial arts ________.

[ ]

A.when he was a child at a primary school

B.while he studied at a senior high school

C.when he first saw them in a film

D.as soon as he came to study in Xi'an

4.The author has come to realize that Chinese martial arts can ________.

[ ]

A.be beneficial to people both in mind and in body

B.be beneficial to people either in mind or in body

C.benefit people physically better than mentally

D.benefit people mentally better than physically

5.The last paragraph implies that ________.

[ ]

A.American people have quite a lot of free time

B.Chinese martial arts have become very popular in the US

C.the author wants to set up a Chinese culture club
