As is known to all, many things can be measured in terms of data. Sometimes data can indeed tell the truth. With the help of data we can easily know the price of a can of Coke in the supermarket or the result of a football match. 1______ What is more important, data seem to be fairer than words or statements. If the data are true, we don' t have to worry about being cheated. Nowadays, as lies exist in the world, data are expected to tell the truth. Therefore, many of us would rather believe data.
On the other hand, if we judge things only by data from the so -called specific research, aren't we a little too narrow-minded? Many people often treat the so -called specific data unwisely just to make sure that they are making the right decisions. 2_____For example, how can you tell that somebody isn't a good student just because he or she doesn’t get high marks in the final examination?
3______ For example, the degree of your feeling happy in your life, the depth of love between you and your friends, and the faith you have in your country. We can only feel them in our hearts but can never express them in data.
There is no doubt that analyzing the exact data is important to assessment of an actual event. But data should be dealt with wisely. We often get wrong data which mislead us. 4_____Remember, data have no feeling but we humans have. Data do not mean much to people if we do not have the abilities to analyze the data with the knowledge and confidence to judge whether they are true or false. 5______
Data are data after all. Life is much more colorful than the pale data. So give the cold data a warm heart and we' 11 find that the world is far more wonderful than the pale data can describe.

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external(外部的) result or product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language--- all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts (路标)or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they go through new experiences and unexpected obstacles(阻碍). In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to be faced with the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential(基本的) to our ability to grow.
These feelings of insecurity and self – doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and overcome these internal(内部的) fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we cease(停止) to grow. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.
1..A person is generally believed to achieve personal growth when______..

3..When the author says “a new way of being” (para. 3), he is referring to _____.
A.a new way of taking risks
B.a new approach to experiencing the world
C.a new system of adapting to change
D.a new method of finding ourselves
4..For personal growth, the author may not support __________. .
A.curiosity and more chances
B.being quick in self – adaptation
C.open – minded to new experiences
D.avoidance of internal fears and doubts
Nearly all our food comes from the soil. Some of us eat meat, of course, but animals live on plants. If there were no plants, we would have no animals and no meat. So the soil is very necessary for life. The top of the ground is usually covered with grass or other plants. There may be dead leaves and dead plants on the grass. The waste matter (粪) from animals also falls on it.
All soil needs food. If we do not give it any, the plants will be weak. Farmers found that animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crop (庄稼) should not be grown in the same place every year; it’s better to have a different crop. A change of crop and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land good.
1.What would happen first without plants?
A.People would have more crops. B.Animals would die.
C.There would be more food. D.There would be less soil.
2.What does the writer tell us in the first paragraph (段落)?
A.Leaves, plants, grass and waste live on each other.
B.There would be no animals without meat.
C.There would be no plants without animals.
D.People, animals, plants and soil live on each other.
3.Which is the best food for soil in the field?
A.Chemical fertilizers B.Plants and grass. C.Animals’ waste. D.Different crops.
4.Why do we often grow a different crop in the same place every year?
A.Because we can keep the soil rich this way.
B.Because we don’t have enough land.
C.Because we want to have a different food.
D.Because we do this as a habit.
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Soil and Waste B.Plants and Animals C.Food and Waste D.Soil and Food
Listening to a radio broadcast in a foreign language is difficult for many of us. We may have studied the language for several years, and are able to read it, perhaps even write in it. But listening and understanding the spoken language require special skills. Some people have a natural ability that helps them to learn a language quickly, while others must study for a long time. Everyone, however, can improve his or her listening skills with practice.
We are good listeners in our own language because we have had years of practice. We understand the grammar and the language. We know what to expect a person to say to us in almost any situation. We have been in similar situations many times, and we have heard it all before. We can understand it, even if we do not listen carefully.
But this is not true with a foreign language. We must listen with our full attention. And we must try not to let the cultural style of our language affect our understanding of the foreign language. Listening to a foreign language broadcast is easier if we know something about it. There are clues that can help us. One clue is the time of a day. Morning programs usually contain many short items of news, information or entertainment. The items are short because most of us are getting ready to go to work in the morning. Often we do not have time to listen to long programs. Evening programs are different. There is time for more details about the subjects discussed.
We can get a clue about the program from the music at the beginning, but we must be familiar with the music of the foreign culture. The kind of music—serious and slow, or fast and light—can tell us what kind of program to expect. The name of the program can give us good information about what it will contain.
Another good clue is the broadcaster. The more we listen to the same person, the easier it will be to understand him. His speaking style will become familiar to us. Further, the broadcaster provides clues to the organization of the broadcast at the beginning of the program. The broadcaster usually gives us the highlights of the program to prepare us for the details that will follow.
1.We are good listeners in our own language because ________.
|
A.we have a natural ability of learning language |
B.our own language is much easier |
|
C.we listen to our own language more carefully |
D.we have practiced it for years |
2. If you don’t have enough time, you can listen to ________.
|
A.evening programs |
B.programs with soft music |
|
C.morning programs |
D.familiar programs |
3.You can know the information of the program according to ________.
|
A.its music |
B.the broadcaster |
|
C.its name |
D.the time of the program |
