Just six weeks after our Christmas visit, Daddy became very 9 and was hospitalized. This time, he was fighting a 10 kind of war.As I sat by his bedside, we discussed the 11 .He told me how much receiving those lipstick-kissed letters had 12 to him when he had been so far from home.

A Beautiful Dress

My neighbor's eight-year-old daughter used to live in the countryside, her native place.Recently her parents 1 her to town to live with them.Wild and uneducated, she would use 2 words when she was angry.Sometimes she went so far as to 3 on the ground, to the 4 of all people around. Her parents tried to 5 her by beating and kicking. However, she became more 6 .Finally they became thoroughly 7 with her.

One day their next-door 8 , a retired teacher, gave the girl a snow-white dress, which was very 9 .It immediately caught the girl's 10 and made them shine brightly.

The girl put on the dress and became quite a 11 person. She no longer acted rudely or hit others. She 12 seldom rolled on the floor. She knew running wild was not 13 for her in a beautiful dress.Since then, the girl had been 14 , neat, and lovely.

The story set me 15 a lot.Perhaps everyone has a beautiful dress 16 somewhere in his or her heart.Only some people are not aware of it, 17 it or take no notice of it. 18 is a powerful force or weapon-that's something 19 by many of us.It can arouse fine qualities that humans are 20 with but have so far hidden somewhere. It has a soul-shaking influence that is indeed unmatched.

Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved everything:animals, spiders, insects…

One day while walking through the woods, the nice old man found a cocoon(茧)of a butterfly. He took it home.A few days later, a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

  The butterfly then appeared easily.

But it had a swollen body and small, fragile wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would be smaller in time.Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(慢慢爬行)around with a swollen body and fragile wings.

It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and hurry did not understand was that the limited cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.If we were allowed to go through our life without any obstacles and difficulties, it would disable us.We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.

The butterfly could never fly because ________.

[ ]

A.

it was too fat and strong.

B.

it loved crawling around.

C.

it got out of the cocoon easily.

D.

it didn’t get through the cocoon.

(2)

[ ]

A.

B.

C.

D.

(3)

What is the implied meaning of the passage?

[ ]

A.

Life without any obstacles and difficulties is perfect.

B.

Obstacles and difficulties contribute to success.

C.

Never help a butterfly to get out of the cocoon.

D.

A butterfly can never fly without going through the cocoon.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

I live in Japan where electronic items are a way of life, so it’s no surprise that many students carry these little electronic dictionaries.E-dictionaries may be lighter and compacter(简洁的)than any paper dictionary. 1 However, to me, these are the limits of their advantages.

I think e-dictionaries should be limited in their use in classrooms. 2

E-dictionaries are much more expensive. In Japan, they cost from 10,000 yen(US $ 100)to as much as 40,000 yen, depending on how many functions you want(or think you want)and depending on how fashionable you are.My trusty Random House paper dictionary, copyrighted at 1995, cost me a mere US $ 12.95 plus tax.

E-dictionaries are more fragile.Drop you paper dictionary.Go ahead.Hold it above your head and drop it. 3

E-dictionaries need batteries.Batteries are temperature sensitive.Batteries cost money, too.

E-dictionaries have keypads.Typing in the spelling of a word is harder and more time consuming than looking through pages and using the index at the top of each page.

4 Sound.Little devices beep(嘟嘟声)when you press the buttons, but it’s very disturbing to the people in a classroom situation or library.

Finally, let’s consider making corrections or additions. No dictionary is perfect, paper version or electronic. However, when you find something you’d like to change in the e-dictionary, you can’t do anything about it.You can pencil in some notes with the paper type.Similarly, if you learn a word that is not in the dictionary, a few notes of a pencil make it easy to increase its memory capacity. 5 And, for those students whose habit is to mark certain words with a highlight pen for ease of future reference, again, the paper dictionary wins out.

A.But it’s impossible to do so with a keypad model.

B.They may even contain more words and expressions.

C.Let me add a statement about one that really troubles me.

D.Now, try this with any lightweight plastic e-dictionary, and you’ll be picking up pieces.

E.That huge, heavy paper dictionary that you see in your library looks like a building block in size and weight.

F.E-dictionaries have advantages as well as disadvantages.

G.Let’s take a look at the following reasons.
