Passage 26

Artists of the Bird World

Among some kinds of birds, the males are brightly decorated with head crests(冠毛)or fancy tail feathers(羽毛). Their beautiful colors help them attract mates.

But the coloring of the male bowerbirds is dull (单调). They do not have crests of fancy feathers. They need some way to attract mates. So they build and show off small houses called bowers(圆亭). The bowerbird of Australia builds his bower of sticks and leaves. Shaped like a tunnel, it is large enough for the male of dance and play inside; He can enter or leave through openings at both ends.

A male decorates his bower with bright and interesting treasures. He uses flowers, shells, stones, feathers, and fruits. If he finds a bottle cap or silver coin, he uses that, too. He may lay bright objects in heaps (堆) around the bower. He may hang some on the walls, just as people hang pictures in their houses. If some object does not match the others, he removes and hides it.

Sometimes a bowerbird paints the inside wa1ls with colored berry juice. For a brush, he uses a leaf.
