     When the European explorers first came to North America, there were about 1300 groups of Native Americans. These groups were different from one another.

     In the east, Native Americans hunted and grew crops. They made houses of wood and bark. They lived in houses because they stayed in one place to grow crops.

     On the Great Plains, Native Americans hunted buffalo. They lived in tents that could be moved quickly. They needed to follow the buffalo.

     In the dry land of the southwest, Native Americans grew crops that did not need much water. They made houses out  of clay, sand, and straw.

     In the northwest, Native Americans fished and cut down trees to make houses and boats.
