Both the Chinese family and the American family are smaller than before. Most young Chinese parents have only one child while young Americans also prefer to have fewer children than their parents.

But unlike the Chinese family, many young Americans think it is not easy to get on with their parents. They will leave their parents and have their own home once they get married. Many of them would almost never live with their parents again. It is really a sad thing.

Things are different in China. Both the young and the old think there are problems between them, but they will try to understand each other. Sons and daughters in China still feel that they must take care of their old parents while old people want to do something for their busy children. So it is still very common in today’s China to see married sons or daughters living with their parents. But China no longer has four generations (代) in the same home.

American Father’s Day is on the 3rd Sunday in June. This holiday has a very short history. Father’s Day was started because there was a Mother’s day, and just because some Americans thought that if we had a Mother’s Day, we should also have a Father’s Day. So I guess, if we didn’t have a Mother’s day, we never would have had a Father’s Day. Another part of the reason why Father’s Day has become important in North American is that businesses found it was a good way to get people to buy a gift (礼物) for their father, a gift from their store (商店) or their company (公司).

Learning about Father’s Day may help us understand some of American’s traditional values (价值) . For example, many grown-up Americans have a hard time saying to their father, “I love you, dad,” even if they love him very much. And some fathers feel uncomfortable when their child says---especially when a son says, “I love you.” For hundreds of years in Europe (欧洲) and then in America children were expected to love their mothers and respect (尊敬) their father. Mothers, especially, would teach their children to respect their father, sometimes even to the point of making the children afraid of their father.
