Who’s in control
of your life? Who is pulling your string? For the majority of us,it’s other people-society,
colleagues,friends,family or our religious
community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young,of course. We were
brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was
a nice experience and so we learned to do
everything we could to make other people like us.As Oscar Wilde
puts it,”Most people are other people.Their thought are someone
else’s opinions,their lives a mimicry(模仿),their passions a
quotation.”
So when people
tell us how wonderful we are,it makes us feel good.We long for this
good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore,we are so eager
for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives.failing to do the
things we really want to.Just as drug addicts and
alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix(一剂毒品),we worsen our own
existence to get our own constant fix of approval.
But,just as with any
drug,there is a price
to pay.The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be
ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think.People have their
own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and,in the end,
they're more interested in themselves than in you.Furthermore,if we try to live
by the opinions of others,we will build our life on
sinking sand.Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change
their opinions all the time. The person who tries to
please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one
in the process.
So how can we
take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other
people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values——not
values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come
from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing
opinions and value systems of
others,we will live a more authentic,effective,purposeful and
happy life.

It was Monday.
Mrs. Smith’s dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house.
Considering that
there was no better way, Mrs. Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the
following words on it “Give my dog half a pound of meat.” Then she gave the
paper to her dog and said gently, “Take this to the butcher, and he’s going to
give you your lunch today.”
Holding the piece
of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s. It gave the paper to the
butcher. The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the
lady’s handwriting and soon did it as he was asked to. The dog was very happy,
and ate the meat up at once.
At noon, the dog
came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After
reading it, he gave it half a pound of meat once more.
The next day, the
dog came again exactly at noon. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in
the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at paper, and gave the
dog its meat, for he had regarded the dog as one of his customers(顾客).
But, the dog came
again at four o’clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher’s
more surprise, it came for the third time at six o’clock, and brought with it a
third piece of paper. The butcher felt a bit puzzled. He said to himself, “This
is a small dog. Why does Mrs. Smith give it so much meat to eat today?”
Looking at the
piece of paper, he found that there were not any words on it!

Beijing (Oct. 15)--China
is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil shortages, carmakers
have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles(混合燃料汽车) for the Chinese
market.
The first China made Toyota’s
hybrid car Prius hit the road last week. Let’s have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a
hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars use an
electric motor with rechargeable batteries(充电电池) and a gasoline engine.
A hybrid car has
a smaller than traditional gasoline engine and an electric motor. The gasoline
engine provides 99 per cent of the power when the car is cruising(匀速行车)。
The electric
motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration(加速度)is needed.
Step into a
Prius, and turn on the power. The first thing you notice is that it is quieter
than a traditional car. At this point, the car’s gasoline engine is dormant.
The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24km/h. If you stay at low speed, you
are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no
exhaust gas given off.
An onboard
computer decides when to use the gasoline engine, when to go electric, and when
to use a combination of the two. If you go over 24km/h, when you step on the gas
pedal(油门), you are telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electric
motor recharges automatically(自动的)when braking. And when
driving at certain speeds, the gasoline engine not only powers the car but also
recharges the batteries.
When you use the
brake, the electric motor acts like a generator( 发电机) to produce electricity to
recharge the batteries. Batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.
