D For many women inventors in years past, the invention process was twice as difficult because, in addition to the suffering of inventing, they also faced the skepticism of a world that didn’t believe women could create something of value. Fortunately, over the years, that opinion has been defeated by women inventors like Margaret Knight, who were willing to fight for the praise and recognition. Born in Maine in 1838, Margaret Knight showed an interest in inventing from a very young age. After observing an accident in a factory at the age of 12, Margaret started to produce her first invention. She invented a device that would automatically stop a machine if something got caught in it. By the time she was a teenager the invention was being used in the mills. Later, Margaret went to work in a paper bag factory. While working in the factory, she thought how much easier it would be to pack items in paper bags if the bottoms were flat. That idea inspired her to invent the machine that would change her into a famous inventor. Margaret’s machine made the flat-bottom paper bags that are still used to this day in most grocery stores. However, a man named Charles Annan tried to steal Margaret’s idea. Not one to give in without a fight, Margaret took Annan to court to compete for the patent that belonged to her. While Annan argued simply that a woman could never design such a machine, Margaret showed evidence that the invention indeed belonged to her. As a result, Margaret received her patent. Margaret didn’t stop there though; throughout her lifetime she had lots of different inventions - including a rotary engine, a shoe-cutting machine and a dress and skirt shield. 12. In Margaret’s time . A. women inventors were not welcomed B. women were not allowed to invent anything C. people didn’t believe women could invent anything valuable D. Margaret was the only woman inventor who was recognized 13. We can infer from the text that . A. Margaret Knight’s first invention proved unsuccessful B. Margaret Knight was injured in an accident at the age of 12 C. Margaret Knight was helped by Charles Annan in her invention of the paper bag machine D. Margaret Knight received the patent for the invention of the paper bag machine with difficulty 14. Margaret Knight became famous for her invention of . A. a paper bag machine B. a rotary engine C. a shoe-cutting machine D. a dress and skirt shield 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. How the paper bag machine was invented B. How Margaret Knight received her first patent C. A woman inventor - Margaret Knight D. Paper bag machine - a big invention 查看更多

April 27 is Take Our Daughters to Work Day in Britain. Started at first in the Unite States and brought to Britain in 1994, Take Our Daughters to Work Day has become a special day for girls between 11 and 15. On that day thousands of girls take a day off school and go together with one of their parents to their work places. The purpose of this day is to broaden girls’ horizons and raise their self-confidence.

For many years people have thought that boys can do better than girls in society. But actually, “girls can be whatever they want to be just like boys, whether it is a pilot, a nurse or a chief executive,” says the chairman of the Our Sons and Daughters Charitable Trust, an organization which supported the activity of the Day. “Now the girls have a close look at what their parents are doing and this may help them to be more self-confident when they are faced with a choice of work.”

Schools and many companies support the activity too. Palmers’ Green High School for girls, in north London, has made the day necessary part of careers education.

Zarina Bart, 15, from Palmers’ Green, went with her mother to her Lawyer’s office this year’s Take Our Daughters to Work Day. She found it interesting to see her mother at work. “It’s really strange seeing Mum at work--- running around, getting serious and telling people what to do.” She has always liked this idea of going into law and thinks it likely that she will follow in her mother’s footsteps. Having a chance to see how her mother works has given her more self-confidence.

Experts believe that girls with higher self-confidence aim higher and are more likely to be successful in life. Parents have most important effect on the confidence of teenage girls. If parents believe in their daughters and show examples both at work as well as at home for them, this will give a lot of help to girls. Take Our Daughters to Work Day is surely a step in the right direction.

Dieters are often advised to stop drinking alcohol to avoid the extra calories lurking in a glass of wine or a favorite cocktail. But new research suggests that women who regularly consume moderate(适度的) amounts of alcohol are less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers and are at lower risk for obesity (fatness).

The findings, reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are based on a study of 19,220 United States women aged 30 to 40 who fall into the “normal weight” based on their body mass index.Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston tracked the women’s drinking habits over 13 years.About 60 percent of the women were light or regular drinkers, while about 40 percent reported drinking no alcohol.

Over the course of the study, 41 percent of the women became overweight.Although alcohol is packed with calories, the nondrinkers in the study actually gained more weight over time: nine pounds, on average, compared with an average gain of about three pounds among regular moderate drinkers. The risk of becoming overweight was almost 30 percent lower for women who consumed one or two alcohol drinks a day, compared with nondrinkers.

The findings are certain to be confusing for women who continue to receive conflicting messages about the health benefits and risks of alcohol.Although moderate drinking is associated with better heart health, regular drinking also increases breast cancer risk.

The trend toward less weight gain among drinkers doesn’t appear to hold true for men.A 2003 study of British men showed that regular drinkers gained more weight than nondrinkers.Studies suggest that drinking alcohol has different effects on eating habits among men and women.Men typically add alcohol to their daily caloric intake, whereas women are more likely to substitute(替代)alcohol for food.In addition, there may be differences in how men and women metabolize(代谢)alcohol.Metabolic studies show that after men drink alcohol, they experience little if any metabolic change. But alcohol appears to slightly speed up a woman’s metabolism.

The findings don’t mean women should rush to drink alcohol to lose weight.Other research shows that once a person is already overweight, her alcohol metabolism is more efficient, and so an overweight woman may gain more weight from alcohol than a lean(瘦的) woman. The data do, however, suggest that for many women facing weight problems, the extra calories are probably not coming from alcoholic drinks.

According to the study, which of the following regular drinker is less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers?

       A                 B                 C                  D

A.women are more likely to substitute alcohol for food.

B.men drink alcohol much faster than women.

C.men and women metabolize alcohol differently.

D.men have different effects on eating habits with women.

The underlined word “whereas” may probably mean _______.

       A.so     B.in order that         C.but             D.and then

What can a dieter probably do before reading this passage?

People often ask me how, as a man, I became so devoted to improving the quality of women’s lives.  It wasn’t until age forty that I realized what had started me down my career path.

One morning more than thirty-seven years ago, I was awakened by the passing school bus.  I was thirteen years old, living at home with my two younger brothers and our mother, Doris Joy Heavin.  She had just passed her fortieth birthday.  She was a mother of five children and had suffered emotional and physical problems most of her life.  Her doctor had tried various treatments on her with little benefit.

As I awoke to the sound of the passing school bus, my brother Paul came in and told me that I’d better come quickly because mother was sick.  As I knelt beside her bed, I could feel the absence of warmth.  I put my arms around her, first to feel for a sign of life, and then as a final hug.  I took my younger brothers, aged eight and nine, in my arms and gently told them that our mother was in heaven.

Her death was unnecessary.  The high blood pressure causing the blood clot(血栓) that took her life was unnecessary.  Rather than medicate the symptoms, she could have dealt with the cause of her high blood pressure: we now know that exercise and proper nutrition will almost always reduce the causes of high blood pressure and most other chronic(慢性的) diseases.

Many years later, while teaching a fitness and weight loss class to a group of about eighty women, I realized I was subconsciously(下意识地) searching the crowd for the face of my mother.

B.take exercise regularly

C.give up the treatment

D.treat the disease using medicine

B.The early loss of both his parents.

59.From the passage we learn that ________ .

A.the author was the oldest child in his family

B.the author’s father died long before his mother

C.high blood pressure is a kind of chronic disease

D.many women were found with blood clot at the time

60.Why did the author think his mother’s death was unnecessary?

A.Because her blood clot wasn’t a deadly disease at the time.

B.Because his mother wouldn’t have died if she had a job.

C.Because her high blood pressure could have been prevented.

D.Because his mother was not treated in the local hospital.
