Feeling left out?

A reader wrote to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn't around．Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes．

It's hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class．You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime．You want to have new friends．But how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends．But remember, there’s always room for more friends．　

Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break．Look for chances to say hi to them，smile，and be friendly．Offer to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏)to them．Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom．When you’re at break，walk over to kids you want to play with．act friendly，and say “Hi，can l play, too?” or just join in．

If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends．Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends．The best way to make friends is to be a friend．Be kind，be friendly，share，say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon，you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.

You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left：You can introduce her to your new friends!

American people like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind to them. People of many countries do so, too. It is a very good habit(习惯).
You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table, when someone walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. “Think you” is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters.

Dear Annie,

I have never written a letter to a newspaper before, I have just never felt the need to do such a thing. I have always felt I was quite able to do everything by myself. But now I know I was wrong.

Sometimes you really need help in life, I guess. And that’s why I’m writing this letter to you.

I have a happy family. I love my children and they love me . I’m a mother of three children. I know well how to bring up (带大)children, and two of them are already over twenty, so it is nothing new for me.

“Well, we're in our new house. Let's get a new pet to get along with it,” Mrs. Brown said to her husband.” That sounds like a pretty good idea,” he answered. “Do you want to see the ads in the newspaper？” “No. Let's go to the animal shelter.
