Sally was a student. It was going to be her mother’s birthday. She wanted to buy her a present that would be nice and useful but not expensive.

A week before her mother’s birthday, she went shopping after a quick and simple lunch. When she had been looking for half an hour, she found a shop that was selling cheep umbrellas（伞）, and decided to take a black one, since her mother had lost hers the month before.

She thought, “You could carry that when you are wearing clothes of any color.” So she decided to buy a lovely black umbrella and took it back to school with her until her classes had finished.

On her way back home in the train that evening, she felt hungry because she had such a small lunch that she went along to the buffet car（餐车） for another sandwich and cup of coffee. She had left the black umbrella above her seat in the compartment（车厢）, but when she got back, it had gone! When she had left the compartment, there had been no other passengers（乘客） in it, but now there were three.

Sally began to cry when she saw that the umbrella was no longer there. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what the matter was. She told them that the black umbrella she had bought for her mother was gone, and that she had to get out at the next station. After the three other passengers heard it, they asked her for her mother’s address so that they could sent the umbrella to her if someone had taken it by mistake and brought it back after Sally had got out of the train.

The next week, Sally heard from her mother. It said, “Thank you very much for your lovely presents, but why did you send me three black umbrellas?”

THIS summer, many Beijing middle school students had a different kind of vacation. Instead of hanging out with friends or traveling, they were training hard for the National Day celebration.
To mark the special anniversary (周年纪念)of China this year, the students performed a group dance in a big parade(游行)on Tian’anmen Square on October 1.
Students were training from 7:30am to around 10:00am or from 4 pm to 6:30pm. It was to avoid the summer heat.
They wore white hats, T-shirts and dark-blue trousers. The hats and T-shirts were printed with a red logo, the number ‘60”.
The first week of training was PE. Students practiced standing and squatting（蹲)。 Then they moved on to practice the group display. The use colored sheets in the shape of flowers as a prop(道具). When we watch the parade on TV we will see them making colorful patterns(图案)with them.
What do the students think of their unusual summer?
“Sometimes we find it a bit tiring.” says Lu Wenqi,13.”But most of us think it’s a great honor to take part in such an important celebration.”
Li Hui, 15, thinks the same as Lu. She says her classmates are seldom late for training.
“It’s a wonderful chance for us,’ says Li. “When my parents were in college, they also took part in a national day celebration. Now it’s my turn!”

In western countries, more and more foods have additives in them. What are additives? Additives are chemicals which are put into foods to give them color and taste, to stop them going bad and so on. But doctors say that some additives can be very bad for our health.

Now let’s look at how additives can be bad for our health. For example, a little English girl called Sally Jones is two years old and quite ordinary (普通的). But when she was younger, she never went to sleep at night. She never got tired. Her parents were very worried. Finally, Sally’s parents took her to a special doctor.

The doctor said that she must never eat food with additives in it. He was sure that the additives had a very bad effect on her body, and made her too active. He was quite correct. As soon as Sally started to eat foods with no additives, she began to sleep well at night.

Now she is the same as other little girls, except that she can’t eat many foods that other children love, such as ice-creams, because they have additives in them.
