Rothey has given himself the Chinese name of Luqi or “roadside beggar(乞丐)”. In his eyes, beggars are doing important work collecting rubbish. What they do is not dirty. Littering the street is, he adds.?

Rothey first visited China in 1984 and soon he became interested in Chinese culture. Married to a Chinese calligrapher (书法家), he lived in Huangshi, Hubei Province.?

Many people know him because he often shows up in the street collecting rubbish. “Huangshi is my home so I hope it becomes cleaner and more beautiful,” says Rothey. He has also organized volunteers to collect rubbish in other cities, including Wuhan.?

Rothey says he’ll continue collecting rubbish, as long as he is able to.?

Jill Robinson, 50, from Britain, founder(创立者)and CEO of Animals Asia Foundation.

She has been working for nearly 20 years to stop people from getting the bile（胆汁）from moon bears for use in traditional medicine.?

She began working for the International Fund for Animal Welfare in Hong Kong in the mid-1980s. A business trip to a bear farm in the mainland in 1993 changed her life. She saw so many moon bears killed by people. That made her cry. She said she would be back to set them free.?

In 1998, she set up the Animal Foundation. In July 2000, the foundation agreed to free 500 farmed moon bears. In 2002, the Moon Bear Rescue（救援）Center was set up in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan.?

Now, bear farms have been stopped in the area of two-thirds of China. “As much as we rescue them, they rescue us. These bears rescue us every single day and they teach us to be better people,” Robinson says.?

Zhang Li lies in bed sadly. The 24-year-old young man lost his right leg because of a blood disease (血液病). The doctor said that his 10 years of smoking had caused the disease.

“I first smoked a cigarette when I was in Junior 3. It made me feel like a man and I thought it looked cool. Now I know I was really wrong,” said Zhang.

According to the 2008 China Tobacco Control report (中国烟草控制报告), 130 million young people who are under 18 years old have tried smoking. Fifteen million of them are addicted (上瘾的).

A lot of teenagers are good at art at school, but how would you feel if people called you “the new Picasso(毕加索)” or if presidents and other famous people collected your paintings?
Alexandra Nechita was ten when her paintings became famous all over the world. She visited Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and her family’s native place (祖籍) Romania where 5,000 fans came to see her at the airport. Alexandra said, “When it all started, I was moved. It was very exciting and I loved the traveling, but I got very tired. And I missed home.”
Alexandra is a good student. Her studies always come first. She only starts painting after she’s done her homework. She works on two or three paintings at a time. The paintings sell for thousands and Alexandra’s parents have given up their jobs to work for their daughter. Life for the Nechita family is very different from what it was like a few years ago.
Alexandra’s father Niki left Romania for political reasons in 1985. At first he tried his best to learn English and had different kinds of low-paid jobs.
