“It reminds me of my childhood, ”says one player, Lia Curran, 37, a nurse from London.“Right now I'm growing wheat and flowers.I've got a small garden, and I'm raising some chickens and some cows.I like having the animals. It's relaxing.” Curran's animals, however, is nothing more than a collection of cartoons.FarmVille is an online computer game built into the social networking site Facebook and is described by its players as “addictive”.Launched last June by Zynga Game Network, FarmVille now has many players-more than the population of the UK.The players are largely women over the age of 35.

FarmVille unites the worlds of social networking and gaming.Players are given a ground with six fields, “cash”, a few seeds and a plough and have to build up wealth, skills and neighbors to create bigger, better, richer farms.Inviting your online friends to play means you earn more and get free gifts;you rise rapidly through the first levels but, once hooked, have to work harder and harder with no final level or goal in sight.

“Games like this draw people into a fantasy world that's separate from real life where there are no issues, and where things are simple and controllable, ” Brian Dudley says.In November, he opened the UK's first computer games addiction clinic, treating online gamers who stayed at the keyboard for up to eight hours a day-“the tip of the iceberg”, he says. Two weeks ago, a group of US players launched a class action against Zynga and Facebook.“Most, if not all, of the online advertisements presented through Zynga are scams(骗局), ”the lawsuit states.“The advertisements are highly misleading and often result in users ordering goods or services that they do not want or need.”

According to Nick O'neill from the social media site All Facebook, Zynga is making $500, 000(£304, 000)a day, from its Facebook games, in turn spending some $50m(£30m)a year on Facebook ads.

Lately, I am often asked about my favorite current TV show. The questioner is shocked to hear I rarely watch TV.Whether it is an at-home date night or some good time alone, I can always find something fun to do without the noise and distraction of a TV show. That's not to say there aren't times when I do turn to DVD's or the Internet to watch shows. It's just that there are so many things to do.

There are many games that are grown-up enough to hold my interest.Another activity that kills time is putting to use the building block sets I still have from my childhood. It's very satisfying to achieve a feat of engineering by the end of an evening. It's likewise great fun to create playful artwork by bedtime while avoiding overstimulation from electronic devices.

Nothing sucks up creativity like an entire evening spent watching TV.So, whether I'm in the mood to paint, play my flute, or make something out of clay, I make time to do it.I always hear people complain there isn't enough time to do what they want, but some are the same people who are shocked that I rarely watch TV.Considering their complaints, it is ironic that on June 22, 2011 the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the results of the American Time Use Survey and stated “Watching TV was the leisure activity occupying the most time(2.7hours per day), accounting for about half of leisure tine on average, for those aged 15 and over”.

Sometimes I just come home to find stillness and release the tensions of the day.I turn on neither TV nor the computer, but opt for yoga, a hot bath, a good book, or an early bedtime.Though it might seem extravagant(奢侈的)to go to bed around 9:00p.m., it can really make a difference.Especially when something is bothering me, the distraction of TV only complicates my thoughts, and I can better cope with the world if I just relax.

My evenings of rare TV are enjoyable. It's these evenings of play, creativity and relaxation that make a better-rounded lifestyle.

C.

they just don't bother to find the time

D.

they are too busy to spare time

(3)

We can conclude from the text that ________.

[ ]

A.

the author is only interested in adult games

B.

the author won't play the flute when he doesn't have time

C.

going to bed before 9:00 p.m.makes a person better deal with the world

D.

the author rarely watches TV and also doesn't watch shows on the Internet

(4)

[ ]

A.

distraction

sleepiness

I don’t know if I am missing the greatest pleasure of my life. I am no fan of computer games. Some guys forget themselves and forget day and night when they play games .For example, a colleague has been playing since 1 o’clock this morning and now it is 7 o’clock. He is still commanding his army of little people to attack strange-looking animals. Some games could be fun, 1 admit, and it is therefore understandable that such a game catches players. For example, games like Red Storm or some role-play games, you do something and try to outwit(智胜) your computer. You get some fun out of these games. It is understandable that such a game pushes you into a pitfall(陷阱) of pleasures. But some games look quite stupid and simple. Again for example, my colleague has been interested in Stone Age, a cartoon-like game rooted in prehistoric time. The game is well made, full of strange people and animals and you can play on line with partners. You can have reference books to study so as to shortcut your rivals(对手) and increase your own conquering power.

I believe some kinds of games are really created for adults. But seeing these adults play the simple games with such interest, I just wonder if there is something wrong with me and if I am losing the greatest possible fun of my life. I ask why I don' t bother playing such games and why I seem to have some aversion to such games. I have no answers. Certainly computer games is no my idea of a good time. I would rather listen to some music or read a book. Take music for example. Good music tops my list of pleasures. Nothing could beat music, all in a harmony of sounds and emotions. But how about games? Why am I so strongly biased(偏见) against such games?

1.The underlined word “aversion” in the last paragraph most probably means      .

       A.change                B.liking                   C.comment             D.dislike

2.The games that the writer has a preference for are      .

A.games where there are strange people, animals and killing and fighting

B.games which you can play with partners

C.games where you try to beat your computer with intelligence

       D.games based on history

3.What does the writer think is the best pastime(消遣)?

       A.Music.                B.Reading.              C.Movies.               D.Role-play games.

4.Through the passage, the writer most probably wants to say      .

A.he can’t understand some of the computer games

B.computer games need to be bettered to suit adults

C.computer games are dull and a waste of time

D.he is missing a great pleasure of life
