The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.

    Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran(经营) Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original(原先的) Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing.

Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores—and that was only the beginning. In fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day!

Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gets an understanding of customers in the city. 　Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. 　　We don’t have smog in Oxford. We get fog sometimes, but that’s all. Oxford is much smaller than LA. We only have about 135,000 people. I looked up the 1900 population, it was about 57,000. So it is about twice as many people, not ten times as many, like LA! Oxford is much smaller than London - London has about 7,000,000 people. So that means that LA has more people than London. LA gets hotter than Oxford. We have colder winters too – it can be -4°C in winter.
　　I’m not surprised that your new student only knew about the university. It is famous because it is one of the oldest universities in the country. There are about 18,000 students. The brother of my best friend is at Aberystwyth University, in Wales. There the population is 14,000 and half of that are students! It must be a strange place to live! There are more tourists in Oxford than students, I should think. We get a lot of tourists, all year round.
