When we are in a new place, maps help us find our way easily. However, different types of maps have different uses.
Tourist maps, for example, have signs to show places of interest in an area. When tourists read these maps, it’s easy for them to find where to go and what to see in a place.
Road maps show large areas so that people can plan long journeys. Different types of roads are given different numbers. For example, if you want to go to the zoo, you just follow one number of the road and keep looking at the road signs.
Distribution(分布)maps use colors or signs to show facts about an area. For example, how many people live in an area, how cold and hot some places are, or whether a place is short of water.
Railway maps, use straight lines to show everything. This is easy for people to read. Trains are fast. People don’t have to think about small places they go past. They just need to know the two ends of their trips.

Who was Leonardo da Vinci? You may answer without thinking: "He is the painter of Mona Lisa."
What else do you know about him? Da Vinci was more than just a great artist in history. He's also famous
as a scientist and an inventor.
Recently, the Grand Rapids Public Museum in the US had an exhibition to introduce this great talent.
In one of the shows, named "Leonardo da Vinci's Machines in Motion", visitors could see and touch 30
full-size machines built according to his sketches-including a crane (起重机) and a robot!
Leonardo da Vinci was born to a rich family in Florence, Italy, in 1452. From childhood, Leonardo was
given a good education and he showed talent at painting. By the age of 26, Da Vinci had already become a
famous painter.
However, he showed that he had multiple talents in 1482 when he began to work for the Duke of Milan
as a chief engineer. In the duke's military factories, Da Vinci developed an interest in war weapons.
He designed many important machines, including helicopters and parachutes. He also drew and wrote
about an armored car, which could carry eight men inside and allow them to fire weapons through holes
in its walls. Da Vinci's idea led to the mod- ern tank. Though Da Vinci never built many of the inventions
he designed, some of the things he imagined in the late 1400s are in use today.
As a scientist, Da Vinci was fascinated with the human body. He spent a whole year cutting up dead
bodies in hospitals to learn about human anatomy (解剖). He made more than 200 drawings of bodies.
Amazingly, Da Vinci wrote backward, so the easiest way to read his notes was to hold them up to a
mirror!

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and maths need not be taught in detail, either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Educationis to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.
