To Learn English While You Sleep

If you ask some people, “How did you learn English so well?”you may get a surprising answer:“In my sleep!”

These are people who have taken part in one of the recent experiments to test learn-while-you-sleep methods (方法), which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects, of which English is only one.

Specialists(专家) say that this sleep-study method speeds language learning tremendously(巨大地). They say that the average person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period during the day-and this does not affect(影响) his rest in any way. A word of warning, however: sleep-teaching will only hammer into your head what you have studied already while you are awake.

In one experiment, ten lessons were broadcast(广播) over the radio at intervals of a fortnight ( two weeks). Each lesson lasted twelve hours-from: 8 p. m. to 8 a. m. The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the student awake. At 11 p. m. a soothing (起镇静作用的) lullaby (催眠曲) was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2 a. m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes of revision (repeating a lesson ). Then he was lulled back to rest again while the radio purred on. At 5 o'clock his sleep ended and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before his hard-earned breakfast.

[ ]

A.a soothing lullaby
B.a sharp noise

D.a hammer

4.What was the total number of hours, asleep and awake, that students spent learning English during the experiment

[ ]

A.30
B.120
C.140
D.400

5.Which of these statements is TRUE according to the passage?

Last month I went to stay with my cousin Ken, who is a vet. I've always been interested in animals.
I wanted to have a week's work experience with a vet, so it seemed a good idea.  My cousin Ken is
friendly and easygoing, so I stayed with him, too. We had a lot of laughs.
In their practice, they do a lot of "small-animal" work. In other words, they look after people's pets,
and don't work much with farm animals. Even so, it was very interesting. During the week I helped as
much as I could.  I cleaned out the animals' cages and boxes, as some of them are kept in the building
for a night or a couple of days.  I also fed them.  I looked after the owners when they arrived with their
pets, and made cups of tea and coffee for the two vets and the assistant. I watched all the operations
that were done and asked lots of questions.
On my last day, I helped in an operation on a cat, which had a bad leg.  Sometimes a vet needs
another pair of hands. The cat lived, by the way!
I wasn't sure what a vet's job would be like, and I found it was very interesting.  I learnt that a vet
needs a lot of scientific knowledge. Science isn't my best subject, therefore I feel that it is not a job for
me
. Even so, I'm still pleased with the work experience that I had.  It's a great help while you're trying
to make up your mind.
1. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. There were good reasons for the writer to stay with Ken for a week.
B. The writer had expected to stay with Ken before.
C. The writer didn't feel happy until he stayed with Ken.
D. Ken wasn't friendly until the writer stayed with him.
2. From the second paragraph, we know _________.
A. vets like Ken don't do a lot of work with farm animals
B. the writer helped them less and asked more
C. there were more farm animals than small animals there
D. the writer could do the operations on the animals
3. Sometimes the vets were _________.
A. very worried about the cat
B. very busy
C. sorry for the animal's death
D. sure what they did
4.The underlined sentence "it is not a job for me" means _________.
A. the writer knew a vet's job well
B. the writer didn't want to do that kind of job
C. the job didn't interest the writer
D. he didn't like science at all

How would you like to teach yourself, rather than have teachers? According to the UK's Department of Education and Skills, students will teach themselves in the schools of the future. This means that there will be no more problems such as finding enough teachers.

Estelle Morris, the UK Education Secretary opened the 2002 Educational Technology Conference in London recently. She presented a video showing a computer-generated model of the school of tomorrow. Greater use of computer technology and classroom assistants will help students develop their own way of learning, Morris said. She added that this is a more exciting, as well as more interesting way of learning. At the same time, teachers will be “freed from their traditional role as the source of all knowledge.” Children of all abilities will “form the curriculum around their individual needs.” They will “learn in their own time, at their own speed and in their own environment”.

At home or at school, they will follow their learning programmes by looking at online libraries and watching lessons by world-class teachers and subject experts. Instead of going on field trips, students will use virtual reality. If they don't understand something, they can ask other students “take part in virtual communities with learners with similar needs. They will hand in their work electronically to be auto-market”.

The classroom of the future is fast becoming a reality. And the Department of Education will soon produce a guide to help schools adapt buildings for new technology. These ideas are based on the UK government's plan to create an education system that provides students to develop their individual skills at secondary school level.

Morris said that enabling students to follow study programmes to their own needs means that, in a class of 15-year-olds, some could be starting university learning while others were still learning to read and write.

A spokesman for the UK's National Association of Head Teachers said, “Nothing can change the fact that today's students need to be taught by a qualified, skilled and enthusiastic teaching force, and they need that now.”

1.According to the UK's Department of Education and Skills, the school of the future will ________.

[ ]

A.cause more problems such as not being able to find enough teachers

B.set no homework and no tests for students

C.make good use of computer technology and classroom assistants

D.enable students to learn by themselves without teachers' help

2.If students do not understand something, they can ________.

[ ]

A.go on a field trip

B.go to ask their teachers to help them

C.send e-mails to ask for teachers' help

D.have a look at other learners' homework

3.Which of the following is not mentioned in the article?

[ ]

A.The classroom of the future will become a reality soon.

B.Students can get higher marks by using computer technology.

C.Students can learn in their own way by following study programmes.

D.Students need a skilled and motivated teaching force.

[ ]

A.provides students with a basic knowledge from the beginning

B.gives students more knowledge at primary school level

C.enables 15-year-old students to go to university

If you want to work more on writing, we suggest(建议)that you read throngh the passage below. That will help you learn how to improve your writing.

  Choosing a Writing Topic(题目,话题)

Your teacher and your group members may help you choose a topic sometimes. We suggest that you try if possible to choose or make up a topic that is interesting to you because it will be easier for you to write about something you are interested in.

  Getting Started

Once you have chosen a topic, you have to get started writing.Getting started is the hardest part of writing for most people. However, there are ways of making this job easier, and we would like to introduce you some of these techniques(技巧)at this time.

Brainstorming helps you get ideas for your writing. Here is how to do it.First, take a pen and piece of paper and write down your topic on it.Read your topic over a few times to yourself. Then let your mind go freely. And then write down any ideas that come to your mind. Now let’s suppose your topic is blue jeans. Please do as suggested.

  blue jeans youth/young people clothing

  freedom comfortable enjoyable

Listing is useful for exploring something where you are trying to look at two sides of a subject, the advantages(good points)and disadvantages(bad points)of something, reasons for doing and not doing something.

Another useful technique is mapping. You start by writing your topic in the center of your page in a box.And then as you brainstorm for ideas, you write your ideas around the topic. As you write one idea down, you may think of another idea related to(与……有关的)it, so you could write this second idea close to the first one.Mapping can be useful for helping you see relationship between ideas and also showing important events in relation to each other. Here are two examples of mapping.

Another way to get started and to explore your ideas on a topic is to do some free-writing at the beginning. You can do free-writing after or in place of brainstorming. You write for 10~15 minutes about your topic. You should write anything that comes into your mind.Keep on writing even if nothing comes into your mind. When you free-write, don’t think about grammar, spelling, or punctuation(标点).Just write! And don’t stop writing until your time is up.After you finish, read over what you have written.Draw a line under anything that seems interesting to you.You can free-write again beginning with the part you underlined. You can free-write several times. Each time you bring your ideas more and more closely to your topic.

When you are reading something in English, you may often meet with a new word. What’s the best way to know it?

You may look it up in the English-Chinese dictionary. It will tell you a lot about the word: the pronunciation, the Chinese meaning and how to use the word. But how can you know where the word is thousands of English words? How to find it in the dictionary both quickly and correctly?

First, all the English words are arranged(安排) in the letter order. In the dictionary you can first see the words beginning with letter A, then B, C, D…. That means, if there are two words “desert” and “pull”, “desert” will be certainly before “pull”. Then if there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth… For example, “pardon” is before “plough”, “judge” before “just”, etc.

Do you understand how to look up in the dictionary?

The dictionary will be your good friend. I hope you’ll use it as often as possible in your English study.
