 Read for Fun

The Mitchell school library holds a reading contest called Read for Fun in May every year. Read for Fun is used by the students to increase their reading abilities and learn more about the world. This year’s reading contest was a big success.

Students read books from the school library or the local public library. Magazines and comic books are not included. Students in grades 3 to 9 took part in the contest. Those who read the most pages got the most points. They could exchange their points for prizes.

Ms. Green made a chart showing how many points each student in her class had got. Six of her students went to the library to see their prizes. The children looked at the prize chart anxiously(焦急地) and then waited in line to pick up their prize. “Wow!” Tom shouted excitedly. “I can get a mini CD player. It’s so small and I can carry it with me everywhere.

Summer holiday would begin at the weekend, so Bright Middle School decided to hold a school party on Friday evening. The girl students were talking about what they were going to wear.

“I’m going to wear a short red dress, so everybody will notice me,” said Sandy. “How about you, Susan?” “I’ll wear blue jeans, an old shirt, and a funny hat. People will notice me more than you!” Susan said.

“What are we going to do about the boys?” asked Vicky, “Do you remember the school party we had last year? The boys just stood there; nobody invited us to dance, and we girls had to dance by ourselves!” “I hear that some of the boys have learned how to dance in the past two or three months. I’m sure we can find our partners this time.” said Julia.

On Friday evening, at about seven, groups of students came into the activity hall of the school. Then the music began. The girls stood in a line on the side, and the boys on another side. Mrs. Mott, their teacher, tried to get them together, but failed. After a short while a tall boy called Joe said, “I don’t want to stand here for the whole night.” After finishing his words, he started to dance by himself. All the others watched him. In about two or three minutes, Susan came up to join him. Then Thomas asked Sandy if she’d like to dance with him. Next was Paul and Vicky. Then more and more people began to dance, and there were more dancers than watchers.

At about 8 o’clock, Vicky, holding a microphone in her hand, began to sing, “Should old acquaintance (朋友) be forgot and never brought to mind,…” Then Sandy came up with the song of My Heart Will Go On. Next was Julia’s singing of Yesterday Once More. The last song Right Here Waiting was sung by Paul. With the stop of the music at 9 o’clock, the party came to an end. The students really had a nice time at the end of the term.

Big ocean fish have almost been endangered since the start of business fishing in the
1950s. The scientists found that the number of large fish has dropped by 90 percent in the
past fifty years. The study took ten years. The researchers collected records from fishing
businesses and governments around the world. The magazine Nature published(发表)the findings.
The scientists say the common way called longline fishing is especially harmful to large fish. This way includes many fishing lines that are connected(连接) to one boat. If these lines are joined together, they can reach one hundred kilometers. They hold thousands of sharp metal hooks(钩) to catch fish. Longline fishing is especially common in the Japanese
fishing industry. Records showed that Japanese boats used to catch about ten fish for every
one hundred hooks. The study says longline fishing boats now might catch one fish per
hundred hooks.
The scientists say business fishing can destroy groups of fish much faster than in the
past. It’s not the only worry that the number of large fish is becoming smaller and smaller.
What’s worse, they are smaller in size than their ancestors(祖先).

It’s a long-awaited day for China. The navy now has its first aircraft carrier(航空母舰), Liaoning.
It’s a unique experience to get to know the life in the carrier. The carrier is just like a small city on the sea. It has all the functions for daily life. There are 4 words to sum up its characters: big, small, much and high. The carrier Liaoning is such a huge one that the total length of the whole corridor(过道)could reach over 20 kilometers. But the living space for the sailors(水手)is quite small. That’s because the carrier is designed for researching purposes, rather than comfortable living. Over 1,000 sailors, both men and women, are living onboard. They are arranged among over 3,000 tiny rooms below the deck. For visitors, it’s so easy to get lost. So the first thing the new sailors have to learn is their way around. The number of female sailors is much less than that of the males, taking about 5 percent of the total. But they play a key role in carrying out some special missions.
Also, you will be surprised by the high level of education of today’s sailors. The captain said that over 90 percent of the sailors are college graduates. Six hold Doctor’s Degrees and 45 have a Master’s. The whole team is young but vigorous. The complex work on the carrier requires high management abilities for the commanders onboard(在船上).
【小题1】Why do we visitors get lost easily inside the carrier?

A.Because they don’t have a map.
B.Because the living space is quite small.
C.Because there are too many corridors for rooms.
D.Because the corridor inside the carrier is too long.
【小题2】What does the word “high” in Line 6 refer to(指代)?
A.The aircraft carrier is high since it is just like a small city.
B.Most of the soldiers received good education.
C.The expense(花费)to run a carrier is high.
D.The high-level of their training.
【小题3】Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Liaoning is our country’s first aircraft carrier.
B.Most of the sailors on the carrier are college graduates.
C.There are far fewer women sailors than men sailors on the carrier.
D.It is comfortable for the sailors to live in the carrier.
