Eating habits are different in many countries. The Chinese have a saying, “Eat good things for breakfast, eat a big meal for lunch, but eat less at dinner.” Many Americans agree that one should start the day with a good breakfast, but their ideas about lunch and dinner are different.
Most Americans only give themselves a short time for lunch. So they eat a small meal. After work they will have more time to eat a big dinner. Also a quiet dinner at home with all the family members talking about their day is a way to rest after a long, hard day of work.
Eating at restaurant is also different. In China, people like to talk and laugh while eating. Very often you can hear people talking and laughing loudly, and they are just having a good time. In America it is not like this. People want a quiet place where they can eat a good meal far away from the noise of the outside world. If some people are talking too loudly, the manager (经理) may come out and ask them to leave.

Question: First trip to the USA
For my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip there. I’m worried about correct business behavior and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice?

Re: First trip to the USA
It’s a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s common in the USA.

Americans use their hands to eat some kinds of food, such as pizza and fried chicken. Watch your American hosts, and do what they do.

Re: First trip to the USA
In Korea and Japan, it’s the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don’t take your shoes off. Once I was travelling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Oops!

Re: First trip to the USA
Many Americans are very informal(非正式的)at home. One time I went to an American business partner’s home for dinner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife were cooking dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man’s wife and children.

Re: First trip to the USA
I agree with Lee. You probably won’t speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some   topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. But you’d better not question about age.

As I was leaving to meet Lynne, My roommate told me that I'd better take some money, but I didn't listen
to him. I thought that Lynne would pay because she had invited me.
I arrived at the restaurant exactly on time. I'd been told that Americans expect you to be on time. Lynne
and I sat at a table in the corner of the restaurant and a waitress came and took our order.
The dinner was a great success. I talked a lot about Saudi Arabia and Lynne told me all about herself. After
two hours the waitress finally came and asked if we wanted one check or two. Lynne said two. We went to
the CASHIER AND Lynne paid her check. I was embarrassed when the cashier gave me my bill. I had no
money to pay for my meal. Then I had an idea. I pretended to look for something in my pockets and said,
"Oh! I forgot my money! Can I call my roommate, please?" The cashier showed me where the phone was
and I quickly called my roommate. In a few minutes he arrived with some money, but he couldn't hide how
he felt. He laughed all the way home.
Now, I think it's funny too, but at that time I was terribly embarrassed. I thought that an invitation to have
dinner meant the same thing in the United States as in my country. I guess you have to understand that your
customs are only your customs. When you visit a foreign country, you have to learn about their customs, too.
