         When Kate was eighteen, her mother gave her a beautiful ring.  It was
    a birthday present and Kate was very pleased. A-week later, when she
    was working in the kitchen, she lost the ring. She looked everywhere in
    the kitchen but she could not find it.  She also looked outside the kitchen
    but she still couldn't find the ring. Kate became very sad. She even cried.
         That evening at supper time, her brother, Peter, was eating some cakes.
         "These are delicious cakes ! Who made them?"
         "I made them," Kate said. She was glad that her brother liked the cakes
    she made.  She was very good at cooking.
         "Are there any ...? Oh !  ..." he started to ask, and then suddenly stopped.
    He opened his mouth and took a ring out. "Where did this come from?" he
    asked. "Mmm, this is a strange type of cake!"
         Kate was very excited.  " My ring ! "  she cried. She took it to the kitchen,
    washed it and then came back. She thanked her brother.
         "I'm sorry you got such a surprise," she said,
         "but thank you very much for finding my ring. rii cook some more nice
    cakes for you tomorrow . "

    A long time ago，there lived a famous philosopher（哲学家） named Zun-Nun．One day，a young man came to visit him and asked，"Teacher，I do not understand why people like you dress in such a way．Isn't it necessary to dress well?"

    The philosopher only smiled and took his ring from one of his fingers，and said，"I will answer your question，but first do one thing for me．Take this ring and go to the market．Can you sell this for ten gold coins?"

    Looking at Zun-Nun’s dirty ring，the young man became doubtful and replied，"Ten gold coins．'? 83I am not sure this ring could be sold at that price．"

    The young man went to the market and showed the ring to the cloth，vegetable，meat and fish traders （商人）．No one was willing to pay ten gold coins．He went back and said，"Teacher，no one was willing to offer more than one gold coin．"

    With a calm smile Zun-Nun said，"Now go to the gold shop and show it to the owner．84 Don't give your price，just listen to how much he will pay for this ring．"

    The young man went to the shop and returned with a big smile．"Teacher，those traders really don't know the value（价值） of the ring．The gold trader offered one thousand gold coins for it．"

    Zun-Nun said softly，"This is the answer to your question，my friend．A person cannot be valued only from his dress．"
