In the fall of 1992, when Vicki was ten, she and her father, Jim, happened to notice an advertisement for a new flight school. Her father suggested to her that since she wanted to be an astronaut, she might want to take a flying lesson, just see if she liked it. She was excited.
　　Vicki continued with her flying lessons. She was so brave and devoted that she impressed her teacher and soon passed ground school with straight—A’s. She would have passed her pilot exam, too, if she had been old enough. Instead, she’ll have to wait until she is 16 to get her pilot’s license.
　　Vicki made her first record-breaking flight in September 1993, at the age of 11. She flew a small plane across the United States, from Augusta to California. What does a policeman usually do? It is not an easy job to describe. After all, a policeman has a number of jobs in one. A policeman often has to control (控制) traffic, either on foot in the center of a town, or in a police car on the roads. In Britain, he might be in the Traffic Police and spend most of his time driving up and down main roads and motorways. A traffic policeman has to help keep the traffic moving and help when there is an accident.
　　A policeman has to keep peace, too. If there is a fight or some other disturbance, the police can come and restore order. And they often have to deal with situation at great risk（冒险） to their own safety.
　　We expect the police to solve crime, of course, so an ordinary policeman, even if he is not a detective (侦探), will have to help look for the criminals at times.

Hip hop or rap (说唱） music as it is also called, started on the street and in the clubs of the New York City in the 1970s . But today many countries have their own kind of  hip hop music . This kind of music comes from reggae, disco and funk music . Rapping means speaking to the  rhythm of the music, and it is an important part of the music . People rap to express how they feel about their lives and problems .

There is a new school program called “ Flocabulary ”in which teachers use texts and hip hop CDs to help teach different school subjects . The words of the songs are just what students are studying . This makes learning easy and fun . Students and teachers are excited about the positive results it has had on exam marks . One teacher said, “ I’ve used hip hop songs in class, and I have never seen my students so crazy about history ! You can't imagine how well they imagine how well they remember what I teach ! We even try to write our own songs . ”

Whose idea was Flocabulary?

Blake Harrison, a high school student, was the first person to come up with the idea of Flocabulary . The word “ Flocabulary ” comes from the word “ flow ” and “ vocabulary ” . “ Flow ” is a rap word for “ style ”,or the way a rapper says the words of a song . “ Vocabulary ” means the words you have to learn in a language . How did he get the idea ? Well, he realized he could remember the words of a hip hop song very easily . So,why not make lessons into songs ? Today together with Alex Rappaport, a song writer, Blake produces hip hop songs for maths, science and literature (文学）. They are now used in schools with great success .
