Below are some suggestions given by the English children posted on the website about how to help Africa. Which do you think is the best?
I think health is the most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we give is spent wisely. The money should be spent first on clean water supplies and better health care. ???????????????????????????????????????? Robin, aged 16, Birmingham |
I think the most important thing is to improve the education of the African countries. There is an old saying,? "If you give a man a fish, you'll feed him for a day. If you teach him how to fish, you'll feed him for a lifetime." We need to help themselves, not just throw money at the problem when it appears. ??????????????????????? Rebecca, aged 15, Liverpool |
People seem to give a lot more money to charity when there is a sudden, huge disaster(灾难)like the earthquake. It's good for people to do so, but I also think that everyone should give a small part of their salary(工资)to charity. If everyone did that, it would make a big difference. ?????????????????????????????????????????????? Mary, aged 14, Stratford-on-Avon |
Giving money to charity can help, but it's not the final answer. I think what these countries need is a good government. ?????????????????????????? Bethany, aged 16, Newcastle |

Born as the only child in the family, I am the “king” of the family. My parents are both businessmen and they come home every two weeks. Because they don’t spend much time with me, they always feel guilty* and will buy me many expensive things and let me do whatever I want. My grandparents never let me do any chores because they want me to do my schoolwork.
?? I used to take everything for granted*. I never said “thank you” to people. As time went by, I found that my classmates didn’t like me and my best friends left me. one day, I asked Leo, who used to be one of my best friends. He said that I was selfish, rude* and bad-tempered*. “No one wants to make friends with a person who always receives but never gives anything!” he said. I was shocked* at his words. “Oh, no! Please don’t leave me. I need friends! I will be lonely and unhappy without friends!” I locked myself up in the room and cried. “I want my friends back. But how?”
?? Then I noticed that all the popular kids in the class friendly to others. They always smile and say “thank you” to others. They do whatever they can to help when others are in trouble. Other kids like them and always play with them. “I need to change! I will get my friends back,” I said to myself. From then on, I started to change myself. I learned to say “thank you” to others. I smiled and volunteered to help other kids. I tried to be as nice as I could. Gradually, I found that other kids liked to talk with me and they would ask me to play with them and even told me their secrets. My friends came back to me again.
?? Now I have more friends than I used to do and I am happier than I used to be.

People are very social animals. We need to talk with and do things with other people. We often understand ourselves better when we discuss our ideas and activities with other people. We need to make meaningful connections with friends and family. These connections help us forget our failures and worries. We can focus (集中) on things that are important: the people we care about.
Your community is the area near your home. It’s where you work, play and go to school. It is the neighborhood where your family makes connections with other people. It’s the places you feel like you belong (属于) to.
Communities grow and change over time. Families move from one city to another because of work or family situations. Older people often move to smaller homes or vacation areas after their children have grown up. Their children move out to start families of their own. New families move in when others leave.
Basic services, such as police, fire, post office, health and public schools are in almost every community. Businesses provide services to the community, too. Stores sell things that people need. Restaurants sell prepared food. Offices provide lots kinds of skilled work.
The job of the city government is to listen to the people of the community and help them connect. Some people may move on, but the community remains.
