题目列表(包括答案和解析)

Children all over the world like to celebrate their birthdays. American children are of no difference. They usually celebrate with a party. They invite their friends to their birthday parties. The party may not be held on the right date of their birthday if it comes on a school day. It may be held on the weekend instead.
Today two kinds of parties are the most popular. One is held at home. Parents decorate the house beautiful with balloons and coloured paper. They prepare a special birthday meal. The children play games. The other kind is held away from home. Some are at a special restaurant. The children eat pizza and ice cream. The waiters , who serve the food, also sing and tell jokes to the children. Other parties may be held at a park, or at a movie theatre, or in some other places.
Every birthday party has a cake with candles on it. There is one candle for each year of a birthday boy’s or girl’s age. When the candles are lighted(点燃), everyone sings the special birthday song: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.
As Americans grow older, their birthday parties change. In fact, many people stop having them. They say they would like to forget how old they are. Yet they do like to keep the happy birthday parties of their childhood in mind.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy.

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male(man, instead of woman),claims(声明) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same kind are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and frighten(恐吓)you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

Birds sing loudest in spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.

You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
