The rules(规则,常规) in American schools
Greetings
You needn’t greet your teachers when you come into a very big class. If you are late for class, you may go into the classroom quietly. But you should say sorry to the teacher after class.
Answering questions
Don’t talk when somebody else is speaking. If you have something to say, you have to wait. When someone is speaking, you shouldn’t interrupt him or her. If you want to answer the teacher’s questions, you may stand up and speak loudly. It’s impolite to keep quiet when your teacher asks you questions. If you don’t know the answers, you can say “I’m sorry”.
Other interesting rules
Some American schools don’t allow students to wear caps, sunglasses or too large trousers. And they can’t bring any bananas to school. The school bags for the students are usually sheer (透明的), so teachers can find what’s in it easily.

Middle school students have far too much homework. They usually have to sit up three or four hours every night doing their homework. Now one school in my hometown has made a rule of limiting(限制)homework. The homework is limited to an hour a day and the students have no homework on the weekend. I think this is an excellent idea that will allow students to live better and healthier lives.
Less homework will give students more time to enjoy other pastimes(休闲活动).I have many books which I received as gifts from my parents and friends. They have been kept there on my shelf for several years! Because of homework, I will have not read a single one of them. With less homework, students will be freer to develop their interests in art, music and other hobbies.
More time free from homework will get our physical health better. Many students
like sports, but they have little time to play football, basketball, volleyball and so on. They hardly have time to have a trip or take part in any social activities. They must spend so much time solving math problems and doing grammar exercises. Besides, staying up late to finish their homework leaves many students exhausted in the morning. Not getting enough sleep is not only unpleasant; it also makes students more likely(有可能得)to get colds and other illnesses.

I love my iPhone---it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my computer, as it stores all of my writing and thoughts. Though I love these devices(装置) of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from them and truly communicate with others.
I teach history in a high school. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes(主题) and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and share their ideas with each other in the classroom. I have a rule---no computers, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule before class, some of them were not happy at all.
Most students think that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students believe that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations. Interruptions(打断) by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and students realize that with deep conversation, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

【小题2】According to the writer, the use of technology in the classroom may _____.
A.improve teaching and offer more help
B.allow students to get on well with each other
C.help students concentrate on what they learn
D.keep students from making deep conversations
【小题3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.The teacher will carry on the success in the future.
B.The teacher will have to cancel the rule in class.
C.Some students will be punished according to the rule.
D.More and more students will be absent in history class.

Homework is a big part of going to school. Unluckily, homework has to be done outside class—during times when you would probably much rather be doing something else, for example, you like going to a birthday party instead of copying out a whole Chinese text. Luckily, there are several things you can do to make homework less work

First, be sure you understand the task. Write it down in your notebook if you need to, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about what’s expected. If you want, you can also ask how long the special homework task should take to finish, so you can plan your time.

Second, use any small pieces of time you have in school to work on your homework. Many schools have study halls that allow students to study or get homework done. The more work you can get done in school means the less you’ll have to do that night.

What if you don’t have time in school to get homework done? You’ll need to think about how much homework you have for a given night and what else is going on that day, and then plan your time. Most high school students have more than two hours of homework a night. If it’s a heavy homework day and it seems like you got a task in every subject but gym and lunch, you’ll need to spend more time on homework. It’s a good idea to come up with some kind of homework timetable, especially if you enjoy sports or activities or have an after-school job.

1.Is homework a big part of going to school?

2.What do students like doing outside class?

3.Where can students study or do their homework in school?

4.How long do most high school students spend on their homework a night?

5.What advice does the writer give students on homework in the passage?

The relationship between student and teacher is less formal in the USA than in many other countries, especially at the college level. When teachers come into the classroom , the students don’t need to stand up. (2)Most teachers allow students to enter class late or leave early, if necessary.

However, students are still asked to be    (1)    to their teacher and classmates and to be (1)    during a test. When students want to ask questions, they usually put up a hand and wait. When the teacher or a student is speaking to the class ,it’s rude to talk to another classmate, even in a low voice. When a test is being given, talking to a classmate is not only rude but also wrong. In the eyes of most American teachers, students who are talking to each other during a test are cheating(作弊).
