There was a famous French writer who was a man of many achievements(成就), in his own opinion(观点), and he often told his friends that he could tell a person’s character from that person’s handwriting. One day a woman friend brought him a page of a boy’s handwriting. She said that she wanted to know what he thought of the boy’s character(性格).

He studied the handwriting carefully for a few minutes. Then he looked up at the woman strangely. The woman, however, told him that the boy didn’t belong to her family and that he didn’t have to worry.

“Good,” said the writer, “then I can tell you the truth.” He went on to say that the boy was a stupid (愚蠢的)and lazy person. Then he said the boy should be watched carefully, if not, he would grow up to bring his family harm.“Isn’t that strange?” said the woman, smiling.“This is a page from your own exercise-book, on which you wrote when you were a child.”

  Welcome to the Eiffel Tower! It was built by Gustave Eiffel, a famous French engineer.The Tower was finished in 1889.It is made of iron.There are about 18, 000 different parts altogether.The height of the Tower is 320 metres.It is still the highest building in Paris.

  The Tower is repainted every seven years.It is brown in colour.About 45 tonnes of paint are needed to repaint it.Some amazing things have happened to the Eiffel Tower over the years.Once, an elephant walked up to the first level.A man has cycled down all the steps.And in 1984, tow people jumped off the top, and used parachutes to get down safely.

  Balzac was a famous French novelist. One day he found a very beautiful vase while shopping. He loved

it a lot,but the price was too high,400 francs.

  “Could you sell it at 200 francs?”Balzac wanted to cut down the price.

  “No,”the shopkeeper answered.

  Balzac left without any word. He went back home and asked several friends to

help him. They worked out a plan. Balzac hoped it would work.

  The next day,one of his friends went to the shop and asked for the vase at 300 francs. The shopkeeper didn't answer.

  Shortly after the first one,the second friend went and asked for it at 250. Theshopkeeper shook his head. And so on,the third for 200,the fourth for 150. The fifth for 100 ! My God ! It was too low !

  Then Balzac himself returned to the shop and offered 200 again. To his surprise,the plan worked and Balzac got the beautiful vase at his price.
