He found the ladies liked writing letters, but were afraid of others reading their secrets. So he designed and made some envelopes out of paper. Twenty-four years later, in 1844, two other Englishmen made an envelope-making machine, and so the first envelopes were developed. In 1865, a German artist drew a picture on a piece of thick paper and wrote a few words on its back. He wanted to send it to his friend, but couldn’t find a big enough envelope for it. He went to the post office and told one of the workers about it. The worker thought for a while and told him to write his friend’s name and address on the back of the picture.
