　　One morning Mr Black is driving in the country and looking for a small hotel.When he sees an old woman on the side(边)of the road,he stops his car and says to the old woman,“I want to go to the Sun Hotel.Do you know it?”

　　“Yes,”the old woman says,“I will show you the way.”She gets in Mr Black's car,and they drive about twelve miles(英里).When they come to a small house,the old woman says,“Stop here.”Mr Black stops and looks at the house.“But this isn't a hotel,”he says to the old woman.

　　“Yes,”the old woman answers.“This is my house.And I will show you the way to the hotel.Turn around(调头)　and go back nine miles.Then you will see the hotel.”

　　Jeff Keith has only one leg．When he was 12 years old, Jeff had cancer(癌症)．Doctors had to cut off most of his right leg．Every day Jeff puts on a artificial leg(man-made leg)．The leg is plastic(塑胶)．With the plastic leg Jeff can ski(滑雪)，ride a bicycle, swim, and play soccer．He can also run．

　　When he was 22 years old, Jeff Keith ran across the United States, from the East to the West．He started running in Boston on April 1．He stopped running in Los Angeles．He ran 5,150 kilometers; that’s about 26 kilometers each day．Jeff wore out 36 pairs of running shoes and five plastic legs．

　　Jeff stopped in cities on the way to Los Angeles．In every city people gave Jeff money．The money was not for Jeff．It was for the American Cancer Society(美国癌症协会)．The American Cancer Society used the money to learn about cancer．

　　On the way to Los Angeles, Jeff talked to people about cancer．He also talked about being disabled(伤残)．Jeff is disabled, but he can do many things：he skis, swims, plays soccer, and runs．He finished college and is studying to be a lawyer．Jeff says, “People can do anything they want to do．I want people to know that．I ran not only for disabled people．I ran for everybody．”

　　People have been finding Moon rocks and Mars rocks at the South Pole．Why the South Pole? It seems that the South Pole (Antarctica) is a really good place to look for them and to find them．

　　Part of the reason for this is that Antarctica is a very large slab of ice sitting on a bed of rock. The ice doesn't stay still．It moves，ever so slowly，from the centre of Antarctica down to the coast (海岸)．

　　When meteorites (陨石) fall on the Antarctic ice，some stay on the surface but most get trapped 　 a few metres down．After all，they do come down with some force and heat!

　　The meteorites get caught up in the ice as they move to the sea and a few million years later most of them reach the coastine．

　　On the way to the sea some of the ice passes round mountain ranges where the meteorites get dislodged．In other words，the ice presses them to the surface．

　　Anywhere else on the earth the meteorites either land in the ocean or cover themselves underground in the soil，never to be seen again．

　　In Antarctica，the little black rocks show up very nicely against the white background.

People who live where there are trees and where there is a completely different climate aren't so lucky!
