Everyone tries to get to school on time. But when bad weather gives you trouble, can you still make it before the bell rings?

In northern China during spring, big sandstorms often make trouble for students and everyone else.

‘When we had a sandstorm last week, I had to get up half an hour earlier so I wouldn't be late for school,’said Xing Wei, a Junior 1 boy at Yaohua Middle School in Tianjin.

Xing usually gets up at about seven and needs 20 minutes to get to school. But on sandstorm day, he needs 40 minutes. When the sky is dark with sand, buses and cars all move much more slowly.Sometimes, people can't even see for 200 metres.

Sandstorms usually happen in spring. This year, sandstorms started in late Match. They have happened in more than 10 provinces in northern China this year.More than 70 million people have had problems in those places because of the storms.

People in southern China don't have to worry about this kind of bad weather. Most of the sand comes from Gansu and Inner Mongolia. In northern China, lots of places have few trees and don't get much rain.People there have been cutting down too many trees. When there aren't many trees, the ground can't keep enough water.Over the years, the ground becomes looser.Strong winds take the loose sand into the sky.

Sandstorms are bad for people's health. If people breathe too much sand, they could cough or have asthma(哮喘).

Sandstorms also give farmers lots of problems.Sometimes their sheep get lost in the storms and never get back home. The winds also tear farmers' houses down.

What can you do to stop sandstorms? Here's an idea:Ask your parents to help you plant some trees this spring.

If you see people cutting down too many trees, tell them about the danger of sandstorm, and ask your government to stop them from cutting.

Fire can help people in many ways. But it can also be very harmful. Fire can make water hot and house warm, give light and cook food. But fire can burn (燃烧) things, too. It can make trees, houses, animals and other things catch fire (起火). If some people can't run away from fire, it can kill them. This happens in every country every year.

Sometimes big fire can burn forests. A month ago, a large forest fire broke out in Yunnan Province. It lasted nearly half a month. The forest in Heilongjiang Province and the grassland in Inner Mongolia caught fire in May, 2006. After more than ten days' fight, over 30,000 people and soldiers put out (扑灭) the fire at last.

Nobody knows clearly when people began to make fire, but there are many interesting stories about the first time a man or a woman started a fire. One story from Australia tells about a man who went to the sun and brought fire down a long time ago. Today people know how to make a fire with matches (火柴). Children sometimes like to play with them. But matches can be very dangerous. The match can burn a piece of paper and then it can burn a house. A small fire can become a big fire, and destroy many things. Fire kills many people every year. So you must be careful with fire.
