    early. He sleeps until nine or ten o'clock in the morning. He is often
     late for school.     
         Tony's mother doesn't want him to be late for school. So she

    　　Comera is the only place in the world which has a whistle(口哨)language．We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island．But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language．There are many deep valleys(峡谷)on the island．A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side．But he can whistle and be heard．Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles．The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well．They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers．

    　　We can understand why the whistle language continues．It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn．When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone．If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another．A boy guarding cattle(放牛)on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat．The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town．People help one another in the same way when a car breaks or a cow is lost．

    　　The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more．Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in the different parts of a country．But on Comera you are nobody if you cannot whistle．Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, the people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions．

         Mario lives in Chicago, and he comes from Italy. He's married with two children, Sal and Made. His wife,
    Connie, is also Italian, but she was born in the United States. Mario and Connie are big soccer (football) fans.
    But when Mario came to the United States eight years ago, he didn't know that soccer was a popular sport
    here. The only American sports that he heard a lot about were basketball, baseball and football. He was amazed
    to learn that there were many soccer teams in the USA.
         One Sunday afternoon, he was taking a walk and discovered two teams playing soccer in a park. He
    watched the game. Both teams had excellent players, and the game was exciting. When it was over, he talked

    And Sal said, "I can't wait until I'm old enough to play in the team at my school."
         Last week Mario, Connie and their two kids drove all the way from Chicago to New Jersey to visit
    Connie's cousins. She hadn't seen her cousins for five years, but the biggest reason for the trip was that her
    youngest cousin was getting married. She didn't want to miss the big wedding (婚礼) and the family reunion.
    Her cousins are also crazy about soccer. One night her cousin Lou was playing. It was the game of the season,
    and the whole family went to the game. Mario and Connie cheered when Lou's team played well. The score
    was 2 to 2 at half time. It was exciting. No one scored in the third quarter, and then with only 60 seconds left,
    Lou scored, and his team won 3 to 2. After the game they went to have pizza and celebrate.

    THE SCENE: A classroom in a high school.
            (场景) Summer is over. This is the first day of school. The students arrive one by one or in small
                       groups. Everyone stops to read the sign on the door. It says: 
                       PHYSICS 1, DR.F. DIRKSON.
    THE CHARACTERS: Five students (Linda, Ben, Rudy, Tony, Molly) and Dr. Dirkson.

    Linda: Dirkson? Dirkson? I don't know that name. Who is he?
    Rudy: Don't ask me. He must be a new teacher. I don't remember him teaching in this school last year.
             Do you, Ben?
    Ben: No, but here comes Tony. If anyone can tell you about Dr. What's-His-Name, Tony can. He knows
            everything.
    Tony: (laughs.) I don't know everything. I only know almost everything. What is your question, please?
    Molly: What do you know about this new teacher?

    Molly: He's just talking like that to make us angry, Linda. Tony, What does Dr. Dirkson look like? Is he

    Tony: I don't think so. But don't get excited, Molly. He isn't going to interest you. He's about seventy-seven
              years old and he uses a walking stick.
    Molly: (she is angry) Tony, why do you say that this teacher fails all the girls? Do you think physics is too
              hard for girls? Do you think we can't do it?
    Tony: All I'm saying, Molly, is that girls don't make it in Dr. Dirkson's class. Physics is very difficult. It's
              not like art or music or history. It's a science. How many famous women scientists are there? Hardly
              any. You can count them on the fingers of one hand.
    Ben: That's not fair(公平), Tony. There are many women who are doctors and engineers and scientists. And
            there are more of them all the time.
    Rudy: That's right, Tony. I agree with Ben. Girls can do anything we can do.
    Tony: I don't care what anybody says. I'm telling you the truth, Molly. I'm not saying that girls are not
              intelligent (有智力的). They just don't have the right kind of intelligence to understand physics.
              Dr. Dirskson must know that. Take my advice (忠告) and get out of his class before he walks in.
              (A very pretty young woman hurries into the classroom.)
