(C) Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, in 1770. Both his father and grandfather were singers and musicians in the court of the prince of Bonn, Germany. Little Beethoven’s grandfather was a good musician, but he died when Beethoven was three years old. His father, Johann, was not so good a musician as his grandfather and less talented than his son. Mr. Beethoven could tell that his son had a lot of musical talent. When Beethoven was only four years old, his father started teaching him to play the piano. He was so little that he had to stand on a stool to reach the keys. Johann wasn’t a very good father or teacher. He often drank too much alcohol(酒)and little Beethoven worked very hard. It seemed as if Johann only wanted to make himself famous by trying to become the father of a great musician. At the age of eight, Beethoven had become a pretty good piano player. His father asked people to their home and charged them money to hear his son play. It was not good enough for Beethoven to play for money at his age. Johann really didn’t know how to be a good father and teacher, Johann was not a good husband either. His heavy drinking caused great hardship to the family, especially for his wife. Beethoven loved his mother very much, but she died when Beethoven was seventeen. Beethoven was a born musician, but he could hardly have a happy childhood. ( ) 46.
