Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Products (产品) arc not produced in a "green" way and people haven’t realized the importance of buying and using environmentally-friendly products. These lead to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of waste like glass, paper and plastics is produced (生产). The waste problem is difficult to deal with.
However, today, more and more people are choosing “green” and expecting that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: “Will this soap be bad for the environment” “Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”
Over 20,000 people took part in a web survey (调查) on buying environmentally-friendly products. Among them, 8129 people say that they now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it. That is to say, companies must change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that the products are “green”.
A few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels to show that they are green. Some companies have made the clean and safe products their main selling point in advertisements.
The growing need for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. The public will no longer accept the old idea of “buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it”. As a result, the companies have to take action.
【小题1】Is it easy to deal with the waste problem?
【小题2】What do more and more people consider before they buy products?
【小题3】In the survey, how many people prefer green products in the supermarket now?
【小题4】Is it possible or impossible to get green products in the supermarket now?
【小题5】Why do the companies have to rethink how to do business and take action?

For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshopping—watching TV and buying things by phone. Now teleshopping is starting in Europe (欧洲).In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things.

I want to tell you a story about myself at the airport. I wanted to fly to France with my family on vacation. Before we took the plane, we had to go through the metal detector (金属探测仪) at the airport. When I walked through it, the alarm rang.

“Come here, young man.” said the guard at the airport. “Take everything out of your pockets. ” So I took my wallet out and put it on the table. Then I walked through the metal detector again. This time, the alarm didn’t ring. My mother said that maybe there was something made of metal in my wallet, but I didn’t think so. Anyway, we got on the plane successfully and flew to France. The trip was great and I had a good time there.

When we went to the airport in France to fly home, I got into trouble again. When I went through the metal detector, the alarm rang again. I was surprised, so I asked the guard about it. “Let me see what’s in your wallet,” said the guard. So I took out everything out of my wallet. “This one is made of metal,” said the guard, pointing at the pen I bought last week.

Antifreeze is a liquid(液体) that is added to water to keep it from freezing. When water freezes and turns to ice,it expands(膨胀).The force of water expanding is so great that it will break the hardest metal.Water is used in car engines(发动机) to keep them cool while they run,and if this water is allowed to freeze in winter it can break the iron block of the engine. That is why antifreeze is necessary.
Water freezes at 0℃;the usual kind of antifreeze will not freeze until the temperature is-40℃.A mixture(混合物) of five parts of water and four parts of antifreeze will prevent freezing at-18℃;four parts of water and five parts of antifreeze reduce this to -22℃.
Alcohol is a kind of good antifreeze, but when the air is running it becomes hot and the alcohol boils away,so it must be changed very often. Most people use antifreeze that does not boil away when the engine is running. There are several chemicals that do this. One of the most popular is called ethylene glycol.
