　　Ask any student which subject he or she hates most．9 out of 10 students will answer “math”．No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you may not learn art, geography, chemistry or Chinese, but you always learn math．Why is this so? How come so many students hate math, and yet cannot avoid learning it in school?

　　Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks, “What good do we get from learning math? We can use computers to compute numbers, and we can use computers to store information．I think learning math at school is a waste of time．”

　　However, there is much more to math than just learning to add and subtract(减)numbers．In fact, math is not so much about calculation(计算)as it is about learning to think logically(逻辑地)and solving problems．Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do calculations, but how would we even know how to use the computer if we can't think logically? In short, computers are only tools when solving problems．

　　For example, imagine you are a cook and must serve dinner to 100 guests．How should you divide your resources so that you can get the job done most efficiently(高效地)? In situations like this, the ability to think logically will get you to a reasonable answer and solve your problem．

　　Rules of Reading Club

　　The following rules will be used for the Reading Club：

　　1.All books must be read from page one to the last page in the book.

　　2.The parent or the teacher will initial(write the first letter of one's name)the booklist after a student has finished reading a book.Teachers will initial the booklist only for the books read at school.It is the responsibility(责任)of the student and the parent to write the names of all books read,and the number of pages of the book on the booklist.　　

　　3.All books read must be of the student's reading level(水平)or above.Example：A third grade student should not read first grade books if he or she is able to read at a third grade or higher reading level.

　　4.All books the student finished during the school year(including the textbooks read at school)will be counted towards 100 books.Comic books(漫画书)and picture books will not be counted.Books of good quality(高质量的)read from the school library,the public library,the classroom,home,etc.will be counted.

　　5.When a student has finished a club booklist(one sheet of 25 books or 1,500 pages),he or she should bring the sheet to the office.The child will get a small reward(奖励)and may get another piece of booklist to go on reading.

　　It takes four booklist sheets for 100 books or four 1,500 pages to reach 6,000 pages.Either way you're a winner!

So I am not surprised that my students worry about them, too , even though they usually don't need to．Because they are afraid of failing．However, since it is hard not to worry at all, we all must try not to worry too much．Why? Because worrying makes exams worse ! How to do this ?

　　Ask the teacher about how to revise and about exam skills---- how to work when you are in the exam．

　　Good students don't wait until the week before an exam．They study all through the year．It is not possible to learn everything at the last minutes．So don't leave it till then!

　　If you start planning and working for each exam early and you make sure that you understand what you are studying , then, when it is over, you'll be able to say, ‘What a good exam that was!”

　　Take a short rest during your time of work and revision．If your mind is tired, it will not remember well．Work at the time when you know you will work at your best．

　　If you are studying in the evening, don't go straight to bed afterwards．Your mind will still be “going round and round”----thinking that will relax you, and make you think of other things．

　　If you feel bad, talk to someone about your worries．But don't be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them．
