题目列表(包括答案和解析)
Yang Zhenhua has been a taxi driver for years. He knows every corner of the city. His work usually wins him thanks except when he meets foreigners, for Yang Zhenhua does not know any English.
“Now I study English in my free time,” said Yang in his 40s. He pulls an English textbook from the toolbox. “I study English to help with Beijing's Olympics,” he said proudly. Yang is just one of the millions of common people in Beijing who started to learn English when Beijing was decided to host the 2008 Olympic Games.
Learning and speaking English is “hot” among the people of this 3 000-year-old city. From schools to factories, men and women, old and young are studying their “ABC”. Books teaching useful expressions for everyday conununication (交际) are the most popular.
Some people, such as taxi drivers, bus conductors and the police, are asked to learn basic English. Nearly 3 000 students from 50 universities in Beijing reached the streets last August as volunteers to teach English to the people of this city. They taught common and useful sentences, such as greeting (打招呼) and asking and answering simple questions.
Official figures (数字) show that about 15% of Beijingers can speak English, more or less. It is said that it will rise to 70% or 80% during the following six years. Besides, the government encourages (鼓励) the use of English in many places. The city underground railways gives messages by radio in both English and Chinese.
English, not Chinese, is used as the most important working language for the Olympic development. In the Beijing 2008 Olympic Committee (委员会) , nearly all the committee members can speak English freely. Many are very good at the language.

A famous study was done in a school by a professor (教授) from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average(中等),and they were not the best students at all. Well, guess what? At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.
What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers’ attitude(态度). Because the teachers believed that these five kids were the top students, they expected(期望) more from them. And so these five average students began to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.
Do you know why? If you expect the best from people, they’ll usually want to give you their best. A great leader said, “Treat(对待) a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you’ll make him even worse. But treat a person like he’s already a success, and you’ll help make him the best he can be.”
Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said,“Johnny, you’re the naughtiest(最顽皮的) boy in this class. I’m sure you’ll never change.” The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she met with Johnny after school and said,“Johnny, I’ve heard a lot about you! But do you know that I don’t believe a word of it.” And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did naughty things. Later on, Johnny became a school leader. Because that’s the power of our belief(信任) and attitude(态度) toward children.
1.The professor started his research(研究)by _______.
A. teaching the five children himself
B. asking the five children to find a new teacher
C. telling the five students to work harder than ever before
D. telling the teacher the five students were the best in the class
2.The five average students became top students mainly because of ________.
A. the professor’s study
B. the teachers’ hard work
C. the change in the teachers’ attitude
D. the change in the professor’s attitude
3.Why did the writer tell us the story of 7-year-old Johnny?
A. To let us know how good his new teacher was.
B. To show the importance of encouragement.
C. To show that the boy was clever enough.
D. To let us know the famous boy.
4.The writer writes the passage mainly by ______.

5.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. If you want to get more, you should have new teachers.
B. A professor’s study can help you score highest.
C. Only teachers can make you a top student.
D. Attitude and belief can change a person.
In Chicago, a computerized system has been developed that controls(管理)traffic on the city’s 235 miles of seven expressways. Now one—a controller—can follow the movement of Chicago’s traffic by looking at a set of lights. The system uses electric sensors(感应器) that are built into each expressway, every half a mile. Several times a second, the computer receives information from each sensor and translates it into green, yellow or red lights on a map in the control room. A green light means traffic is moving forty-five miles an hour, yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour, and red means heavy traffic—cars standing still or moving less than thirty miles an hour.
“See that red light near Austin Avenue?”the controller asked a visitor.“That’s a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it.”At the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway, the light kept changing from green to red and back to green again.“A lot of trucks get on the expressway there,”the controller explained.“They can’t speed up as fast as cars.”The sensors show immediately where an accident or a stopped car is blocking the tr
affic, and a truck is sent by radio to clear the road. The system has lowered the number of accidents by 18 percent. There are now 1.4 deaths on Chicago’s expressway for each one hundred million miles traveled, while in other parts of the county there are 2.6.
Traffic experts say that the Chicago system is the “coming thing”.Systems like Chicago’s are already in use on some expressways in Los Angeles and Houston.“Chicago has taken the lead,”said New York City’s traffic director and he added,“Chicago’s a good example.”

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly, with confidence and without hesitation. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to compose(组成)sentences that are grammatically correct. We must know how to arrange sentences in paragraphs, so as to write a good letter or composition.
There is no easy way to succeed in language learning. A good memory is of great help, but it is not enough simply to memorize rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meaning. We learn words not by ourselves, but in sentences. We must learn by using the language. “Learn through use” is a good piece of advice for those who are studying a new language. Practice is very important. We must practice speaking and writing the language whenever we can.
