(1~4小题,每小题用1句话回答,第5小题每个方面用1句话表示)

Elephants are the largest living animals on land. More than 500 different kinds of elephants were found on earth over the last 55 million years. Only two kinds are still alive today:the African Elephant and the Asian (or Indian) Elephant. These elephants can only be found in hot places. The older kinds, which lived a long time ago, lived in colder places. An example is the mammoths(猛犸象)-the largest hairy elephants.

Mammoths were about the size of the largest living elephant, which is about 7 tons(吨). Unlike the elephants today, mammoths had black or dark brown hairs covering their bodies. All the mammoths had tusks(象牙). We can tell this from their fossil teeth.

Scientists found out about most of the extinct(灭绝的) animals by studying the fossils, such as their bones(骨头) and teeth that have been found. However, mammoths are quite different.

During the Ice Age, mammoths died and were covered deeply in the ice. The ice kept them well. While many animals only left behind bones and teeth, scientists found the whole body of the mammoth. Because the whole mammoth has been kept well, scientists can see even the hair, the tusks and the whole body.

Water is all around us. Water is in the ocean(大洋). Water is in the lakes and rivers. Water is in the air. There is more water than land on the. earth. All things must have water to live. The plants must have it. The animals must have it. We must have it too. We cannot live without drinking water. Sometimes, we do not have all the water that we need. The land will dry up without water. Sometimes, there can be too much water in the land. If it rains very, very hard, the rain water will run down the hills. It takes some of the land with it when it runs down the hills. It is called erosion(侵蚀)when the water takes the land away.

Water on the earth will never be used up. It goes from the ocean to the air to make clouds. Then, it falls from the clouds down to the land. It runs off the land out to the ocean again. The clouds in the air are made of water. Sometimes the water fall down from the clouds.

The rain falls onto the land. Some of it goes into the ground. Some of it washes down and goes back into the ocean. Some water that falls down from the clouds is not rain. Some of this water is snow. The snow is made of water. Some water that is not rain or snow falls down from the clouds. Some of this water is sleet(雨夹雪). The sleet is made of little pieces of ice. Some water is not rain or snow or sleet falls down from the clouds. Some of this water is hail(冰雹), The hail is made of ice balls!

We sometimes say the lion is “the king of the jungle(丛林)” because it is stronger and more dangerous than the other animals. It can run faster than most other animals and it can hunt(捕猎) the best. The lion is the highest animal in the land food chain. In the sea, the shark is at the top of the food chain. It can swim faster than most other sea animals. It can also use its big teeth to catch other sea animals and eat them.

What is at the top of the world's food chain? People are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the cleverest. We could not run faster than most animals, so we invented cars and now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than a lion, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.

People's inventions are clever, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago in Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild wolves. The wild wolves usually eat wild rabbits. But in recent(近来的) years, the number of wild rabbits is becoming bigger and bigger because the number of wild wolves is getting smaller and smaller. The wild rabbits competed(竞争) for the grass with the sheep and cows. Much of the grassland became desert because it was seriously destroyed(毁坏) by the rabbits.

Remember that we are a part of the food chain, so we are in danger, too! If we protect animals, we are protecting ourselves.
