On March 27, Saturday evening, people all over the world once again turned their lights off for an hour
to help fight against global climate changes and give the world a brighter future.
For Earth Hour 2010, many best-known buildings went dark from 8:30 to 9: 30 local time, such as the
Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Sydney's Opera House and Beijing's Forbidden City, etc. Millions of businesses and
homes around the world also turned off their lights.
Some 4, 000 cities in more than 120 countries volunteered to turn off Saturday to reduce energy
consumption (能量消耗). "We have everyone from Casablanca to the camps of Namibia and Tanzania taking
part," said Greg Bourne, CEO of WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in Australia, which started Earth Hour.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. In 2008, the event turned into an international one, which
has drawn the participation of hundreds of towns and cities worldwide. Now in its fourth year, more and
more cities from the world took part in Earth Hour as a show of support for action against global warming.
In a WWF survey after Earth Hour 2009, 80 million U.S. citizens said they had participated, according to
Ann. "Earth Hour has always been an event about families and individuals as well," Ann said, "and it's really
about Americans and people all over the world standing up and saying climate change is real and we need to
do something about it now."
However, Earth Hour's energy-saving influence is limited. But WWF says that Earth Hour's real value is
symbolic (象征的).

Many scientists think that the earth is getting warmer and warmer. If the change continues, the natural world and human society will face danger.Scientists believe human activity is responsible for the climate change. We produce too many greenhouse gases. They keep heat in the air and make the earth warm.

Many of the world's governments agree. And they want to solve the problem. So from December 7 to 18, 2009, they held a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark to talk about global warming and climate change.

Representatives(代表)from 192 countries and regions went to the meeting.Although they have not reached an agreement, the Copenhagen Accord(《哥本哈根协议》)was an important beginning to save the earth. It was made by a small group of countries including China, the US, India, Brazil and South Africa. Some other countries at the conference also showed support.

What are the key points of the Copenhagen Accord? The accord limits global temperature increases to 20C by 2050 compared to pre-1850.Scientists think it could help the world to avoid serious climate change.

The accord also says that developed countries must promise to cut greenhouse gas emissions(排放)to the UN by January 31, 2010.The accord asks developed countries to give money to help developing countries.

Many countries and organizations are disappointed that the conference didn't reach a legal document(法律约定).And they think the accord is not clear enough about its goals.

African leaders are worried that the goal of a 20C global temperature increase isn't good enough, because it will mean a much higher increase in temperature across Africa. This could cause big problems like food and water shortages across the continent.

Still, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon believes the conference was an“improvement”.

(1)

What do scientists believe is responsible for the climate change?

Living in the Yukon

The Yukon is different from most places. It is a part of Canada. The Yukon is bigger than California. Not many people live in the Yukon. There are some good reasons for that.

The winters in the Yukon are very cold. Sometimes the temperature goes down to 40°F below zero. Cars won' t start in such cold air. People have to keep a fire going near the car.

Homes in the Yukon are usually log cabins (茅屋) . There are no electric lights or telephones in most of the Yukon. Water may have to be carried from a creek(小溪) . A home can be hundreds of miles from the nearest town.

Living in the Yukon is certainly not easy. Some people from the U. S. move there anyway. A man and his wife lived in a big town in New Jersey and moved to the Yukon. They like the open space there. They are getting used to new adventures(冒险).

One day the woman noticed some sugar spilled in her kitchen. She thought she heard her husband outside, and she went to ask him about the sugar. She came face to face with a black bear. The bear was growling and coming closer. She shut the door fast. “That doesn't happen much in New Jersey”, she said.

1.The Yukon is a part of ________.

[ ]

A.Canada

B.California

C.the water

2.What is the main idea of this story?

[ ]

A.Warming up a cold car.

B.Living in the Yukon.

C.Catching a bear.

3.Many houses in the Yukon have no ________.

[ ]

A.kitchens

B.windows

C.running water

4.People who live in the Yukon probably don' t have ________.

[ ]

A.cars

B.warm coats

C.many neighbors

5.The one who spilled the sugar was probably ________.

[ ]

A.the bear

B.the woman

C.the husband

Geography is the study of Earth and its climates. Scientists use it to study global (全球的) warming and
track (跟踪) the weather. Governments use it to learn where people live and work and to plan what to do
with the land. It is now easier than ever to use geography because of a science called space technology.
The United States launched its first satellite in 1958. Some space missions (使命) that followed were
geographical studies. In fact, earth science is a big part of the work of the National Aeronautics and
 Space Administration(NASA).
Astronauts looked out of the space shuttle (航天飞机). They decided to take photographs of Earth
from their vantage point. Over the years, picture quality improved. Shuttle photography now shows land
features, such as rivers. It can even show the streets of large cities. Photos of the same places at different
times show how the land is changing.
NASA does not use just photographs, though. In 1958 it launched TIROS (the Television Infrared
Observation Satellite). This first use of a satellite to study Earth was effective (有效的) in giving weather
forecasts. It led to the creation of new space tools to use in geography.
The Landsat Program began in 1972. This satellite sent detailed (细致的) views of Earth from space.
The pictures were so precise (精确) that scientists could count the number and kinds of crops in a field.
Landsat showed where Earth's surface had faults along which earthquakes might happen. This information
helped in the planning of new cities and factories. Landsat also made discoveries. In Antarctica it located
ranges of unknown mountains. It pinpointed small lakes. in Virginia that were not on maps. Landsat, now
  more advanced, still flies today.
Another space tool is Earth Observing-1(EO-1). This spacecraft flies right behind Landsat. It takes
pictures of the same sites. The two sets of pictures, viewed together, show how cities grow and how other
places, such as rain forests, become smaller over time. This helps scientists learn how people affect (影
 响) geography.
One of the newest space tools is the Geographical Information Systems(GIS). GIS is computer
software  that helps scientists to study Earth. GIS is different from earlier space tools. Businesses, schools,
and even average people--not just the government--can use it to show them how changes in the planet
 might affect them.
1. Why do governments study geography according to the passage?
    A. To improve the environment.
    B. To make the land use plan.
    C. To make new discoveries.
    D. To count the crops in a field.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. The U.S. satellite program began in 1972.
    B. Landsat was able to take pictures of other planets.
    C. TIROS was successful in giving weather forecasts.
    D. GIS can only be used by the government.
3. EO-1 takes photographs of the same places as Landsat because _____.
    A. the two groups of pictures can show the changes of Earth
    B. EO-1 is practicing for future photography missions
    C. Landsat is out of date and new pictures are needed
    D. Landsat can't send detailed views of Earth from space
4. From the passage, we can infer that _____.
    A. GIS is the newest computer to study Earth
    B. NASA only depends on photos to study Earth
    C. satellite pictures can give more detailed information
    D. recent U. S. satellites are as advanced as the old ones
